Fuel price recoveries in South Africa are off to a horrible start for motorists in March, with extended rand weakness against the dollar and oil prices grinding higher, putting prices on the back foot. Early data from the Central Energy Fund for the start of the month shows that petrol and diesel prices are both showing an under-recovery, pointing to fuel price hikes for April. Petrol prices are showing another sizeable under-recovery of around R1.15 per litre, while diesel prices are showing a smaller under-recovery of around 65 cents per litre. According to Bloomberg analysis, while oil prices have been trading in a relatively fixed range, they have been slowly and steadily grinding higher since the start of the year. This has been supported by cutbacks from oil-producing countries (OPEC+) as well as continued tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in shipping in the Red Sea – the latest of which was a strike on a commodity ship on Wednesday.

“There are a lot of people who don’t see a future in the wine industry,” said Ms Lyndall Rowe, chief executive of Riverland Wine, an industry group representing growers and winemakers. It is a problem that is playing out all around the world. Although global production hit a 60-year low in 2023, a wine glut is persisting, signifying that demand is falling even faster. While data from the International Organisation of Vine and Wine shows that global consumption has lagged behind production of wine since at least 1995, the industry has hit an inflection point as changing drinking patterns and lacklustre economic conditions look here to stay. California is currently experiencing “one of the worst imbalances in demand and supply we’ve seen in 30 years”, said Mr Stuart Spencer, executive director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission in the Central Valley.

The US urea market remains the only region seeing higher urea prices at present. American prices are being driven by relatively strong short term demand and a shortage of immediate product. Prices for April are much lower than prompt product but if this demand continues, US prices for April may well start to rise. With other markets being slow for urea, more cargoes are likely to be directed to the US, which will reduce prices – unless there is a surge in prices globally, which is a very low probability at this stage. French farmers, for instance, managed to persuade their nation’s leaders to ban food imports treated with the insecticide thiacloprid, dedicate €150 million (US$163 million) annually to support livestock producers and provide European-wide definitions for what constitutes lab-grown meat. German farmers also saw movement in their favor from their lawmakers on fuel subsidies. Though the roots of the regenerative movement trace back to Indigenous communities and other ancient traditions—farmers who listened to the land—Robert Rodale first coined the term “regenerative agriculture” in the early ‘80s, referring to any type of farming that encourages environmental improvement. His research argued that healthy soil is crucial to the quality of our food systems and affects everyone on the planet. READ MORE

California is currently experiencing “one of the worst imbalances in demand and supply we’ve seen in 30 years”, said Mr Stuart Spencer, executive director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission in the Central Valley. Australian grape-grower Tony Townsend destroyed half his 14ha vineyard in 2023. The fields were healthy and vibrant, but he estimates he would have lost about A$35,000 (S$31,000) to harvest them. While a heatwave is holding him back from ripping out the rest, he plans to finish the job once the weather cools – losing all the vines he has tended for the past decade. READ MORE

Russian wheat last traded somewhere close to US $200/t FOB down $8/t on the week. The race for the bottom is ensuring that Russian origin is very high on the tender list. French, Romanian and Ukrainian origins are also competing at very low prices to try and win business. The rightful question is, can this be sustainable? Especially when reports are suggesting that wheat and corn prices are now below the cost of production in some countries. Russian exports are expected to reach a record 51mmt this year, leaving a sizeable carryout of 12mmt, even before the new season crop, estimated at a very healthy 92mmt, comes online.

South Africa's agricultural machinery sales fell notably in February 2024. The tractor sales were down 34% y/y, with 516 units sold, and the combine harvester sales were down 54%, with 18 units sold. These significant sales decline broadly reflects the normalization of sales after a few years of robust activity.

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) in South Africa is at the forefront of a transformative approach to potato production, specifically aimed at bolstering small-scale farmers.

Government leaves cannabis farmers high and dry in South Africa -Despite promises of creating a fully-fledged cannabis industry in South Africa, small businesses hoping to enter the market exhibiting a “gold rush” continue to be left high and dry when it comes to obtaining licenses and funding.

Global cotton production continues to outpace global consumption. This trend is not expected to change through the end of the current season. In light of this trend, global cotton prices, as reflected by the Cotlook A-Index, are expected to remain below 95 cents per pound (cpp).

The supply of cucumbers across the big consumption market of Europe is on the lower side with slow starts for many production countries. However, pricing is also low in most EU countries. At the largest auction in Belgium the 'largest cucumber acreage in recent history' was noted.

Crop domestication has played a crucial role in human civilization, it is essential to balance the benefits with the drawbacks. Sustainable agricultural practices that prioritize genetic diversity, environmental conservation, and nutritional quality are important considerations for the future of crop cultivation.
