Zambia is one of southern Africa’s main producers and exporters of maize. This means if the maize harvest is down notably in the country, there will be no volume for exports to neighbouring countries that also need supplies. This happens at a time when South Africa, although potentially with sufficient supplies for domestic consumption, would have a massive decline in the volume of maize available for exports. At the start of this year, there were reports of roughly 2.7 million Zimbabweans potentially at risk of hunger because of the drought impact in their summer grain fields. Moreover, Reuters reported that “Zimbabwe plans to import 1.1 million metric tons of maize over the next year”.
Emerging farmers in the priority areas of poultry, piggery, grains, vegetables, red meat, cannabis, aquaculture, rabbit, bee farming and agri-processing have been invited to apply for funding. This is part of the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment’s efforts to grow the agricultural sector, create jobs and alleviate poverty in the province. The Comprehensive Agricultural Support Prorgramme, which closes on Friday, is informed by the department’s elevated priority focus to maintain sustainable food security in the province. “We are making a call to the historically disadvantaged and the vulnerable groups, our women, youth and people living with disabilities to apply for the farmer support grant and become part of our relentless fight against food insecurity,” Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mbali Hlophe, has said over the weekend. Hlophe said the farmer support programme aimed to provide small medium and micro enterprise farmers with a much-needed boost to their farming establishments. The relief programme is building on its previous successes, which has seen an average of 250 beneficiaries per annum empowered into the mainstream economy since its establishment in 2004.
Outstanding articles of the week.
The divergence between cattle prices in the two hemispheres that occurred throughout 2023 appears to have stabilized, but seasonal conditions continue to influence markets where consumer demand is weaker. Without strong demand pulling volume through the supply chain and bidding prices up, price setting falls back to the producer end of the chain and, with it, increased exposure to seasonal conditions and producer sentiment. Our outlook for global beef production remains neutral, with increases in Australia and Brazil offsetting declines in Europe and the US. READ MORE
The researchers state that if carbon emissions remain high and environmental protection low, global heat stress will reduce fertility, affect the growth of calves, and can result in increased deaths. In dairy cows, it will also result in reduced milk production. READ MORE

The African continent remained a leading market, accounting for 38% of South Africa's agricultural exports in 2023 in value terms. Asia was the second largest agricultural market, accounting for 28% of exports, followed by the EU, the third largest market, accounting for 19%. The Americas region was the fourth largest, accounting for 6%, and the remaining 9% went to the rest of the world. The UK was one of the leading markets within the ‘rest of the world’ category, accounting for 7% of total exports.
The impact of recent weather conditions on South Africa's agricultural sector serves as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of climate, economy, and food security. It appears that the crop for this 2023/24 season is already down 13% to develop sustainable solutions that mitigate the risks posed by unpredictable weather patterns and ensure the long-term viability of the agricultural sector.
The global need for energy continues to rise, with IEA forecasts of a 50% surge in energy requirements by 2030. This reliance on fossil fuel has resulted in global warming, biodiversity loss and extreme weather events in the global system. This in turn places land, ocean and society at risk of surpassing critical tipping points, beyond which we venture into unsafe planetary conditions.
According to Stats SA, February is a highlight of Stats SA’s publication schedule, with the release of various economic indicators for December concluding the results for the previous year.
After a decade of remarkable expansion, South Africa's macadamia nut industry faces a significant hurdle. As the world's leading producer, the country is grappling with a substantial price decrease that threatens to undermine its booming sector.
Water supplies for millions, a vibrant fishing industry and some of the world's largest coral reefs are at risk after a cargo ship was sunk by Yemen's rebels.Warnings have been issued that the sinking of the Rubymar, which carried oil and 22,000 tons of fertilizer, could cause ecological damage to the Red Sea.
Africa, despite being home to 17.2% of the global population, consumes only a minimal 3.1% of the world’s electricity, making it the lowest electricity consumer among all regions on the planet as of 2019.
