Rooibos is now available in almost every German supermarket, department store, health food shop, specialised tea shop, and even petrol station convenience stores. The South African brew accounts for about ten percent of the tea consumed in Germany. Last year, nearly 10,000 tonnes of Rooibos were exported to more than 40 overseas markets, with Japan, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK being the top five importers of the product.
The solar rebate for South African homeowners and businesses ends in a few weeks, with the National Treasury unlikely to extend its deadline. Following the intensification of load shedding in 2022, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced an individual tax break in the 2023 Budget, offering R15,000 rebates for individuals looking to install solar. This only applies to purchasing new solar panels, not inverters, batteries, and other costs. However, the renewable energy tax breaks for businesses also apply to these other component costs as long as they are part of a solar generation system. Although batteries and inverters can be used on their own to provide a private benefit to a particular household, the addition of solar panels increases generation supply, which is seen as a public benefit in the face of load shedding.
The South African agriculture industry continues to face difficulties that threaten its viability, while also pursuing exciting new growth prospects. For the Land Bank, which is dedicated to agricultural financing, assessing these developments is critical, both from a risk management and opportunity point of view, as well as on how they will impact the well-being of our farmer clients and the sector overall. Among the most pressing issues are the problems at the Port of Cape Town, which are disrupting fruit exports during peak season for crops such as table grapes and deciduous fruits. Container throughput has dropped compared to last year, due to reported operational inefficiencies and weather patterns resulting in delays in the movement of goods at the ports. These persistent challenges amplify the industry's anxiety, especially as most fruit consignments are en route to international markets. Ensuring that the ports function efficiently is not just about sustaining exports; it's about maintaining the lifeline of South Africa's fruit industry and the numerous jobs it supports.
Failure to operationalise the South Africa’s Agriculture and Agro-processing Master Plan, will be tragic for the agricultural sector and create a precedent of premature abandonment of yet another well-conceived plan that was never fully implemented. Further negative implications will emerge – a damaging loss of confidence in the government and questions regarding the state’s credibility, competence and capability to implement government mandates. The loss of trust will imply that any other plan in the future will not receive the seriousness and commitment it deserves.

Many protests – as in the Netherlands – are at least partly country-specific. In Italy, demands included reinstatement of an income tax exemption that had been in force since 2017 but was due to be scrapped in the 2024 budget. In Germany, where protests have briefly paused after an estimated 30,000 farmers and 5,000 tractors paralysed Berlin in mid-January, the most explosive issue is a government plan to phase out tax breaks on agricultural diesel to balance its budget. The organic fertilizer market is witnessing robust growth as agricultural practices shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. Organic fertilizers, derived from natural sources such as animal manure, compost, and plant residues, are gaining popularity due to their numerous benefits over synthetic fertilizers. These benefits include improved soil health, reduced environmental impact, and enhanced crop quality. READ MORE

Russia already accounted for 80% of Egypt’s wheat imports prior to Egypt joining the Brics bloc and it is a significant supplier to Turkey, another important country in terms of its location on key trade routes.
