A bird flu compensation case that found the state must negotiate compensation with a George farmer for culling during 2021 could open the floodgates for similar claims linked to major outbreaks of the disease over the past seven years. The industry’s largest representative body, the South African Poultry Association (SAPA), said this week it believed the landmark case against the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) would set a precedent and open up cases from farmers and other producers for all three major outbreaks of avian influenza that occurred in 2017, 2021 and 2023. (The DALRRD has since been split into two separate departments under SA’s seventh administration.)

The current iteration of AGOA is set to expire in 2025. Talks of a potential extension offer a glimmer of hope for South African exporters who have benefitted significantly from duty-free access to the US market. According to Dr Noluthando Phungula, a researcher at the Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation, there is a significant financial advantage: “In 2022 alone, preferential access under AGOA helped South African exporters avoid a staggering US$116 million  [about R2,1 billion] in tariffs.” This translates to substantial cost savings and a competitive edge for South African goods, particularly manufactured exports and agricultural products.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has not featured prominently in South Africa's beef export markets in the past, with only small volumes last exported in the early 2000s. The renewed access to this market since the start of 2024 is critical to South Africa's ambition to expand beef exports. The Saudi beef market is sizable, with annual imports worth around US$647 million. About 62% of the Saudi beef imports were frozen beef, while 38% were chilled or fresh beef imports. Some leading suppliers to Saudi Arabia include Brazil, Australia, Pakistan, The US, New Zealand, and Canada.

The prospects for petrol price cuts in August are dimming fast, with the latest data showing a flat result and a likely hike for diesel. Data from the Central Energy Fund shows that petrol prices have moved from a slight over-recovery of around 15 cents per litre at the start of July to around 7 cents. Diesel, meanwhile, is showing an under-recovery of up to 18 cents per litre.

Efficient Group chief economist Dawie Roodt said that while there are many reasons to stay in South Africa, there are many challenges that people need to be aware of. Over the past few years, as South Africa’s economy has deteriorated and service delivery has declined, many South Africans have made the decision to leave or have at least considered emigrating.

Growers should never isolate themselves from other growers around the world and must cooperate to survive Long-standing relations between growers around the world have always been at the heart of fruit production.

Electric drive, with its instant torque, smooth delivery, and scalable power, is absolutely brilliant at pulling heavy loads. In this area, electric tractors can and will become superior to their fossil-fueled predecessors. The issue, however, is that you need a very large battery to pull a decent load for a significant duration of at least eight hours under full load.

Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) president Mzwanele Nyhontso – the new Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development – has made no bones about his plans to push for amendments to the Constitution to address land dispossession.

The Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen says the agriculture sector is currently facing challenges including the foot and mouth outbreak in the Eastern Cape, wildfires in parts of the country, and losses incurred by farmers from the black frost in Limpopo.

Researchers have found that a unique species of marine bacteria is just as effective at fertilizing agricultural soils as mineral fertilizers that are over-applied to croplands worldwide. And, these bacteria could do it with a fraction of the environmental cost that these other conventional fertilizers impose on the land.

Ou Neef, geniet jou winter, dit gaan gou verby. GraanSA
