A closer look at the data shows that white and yellow maize harvest could be 6.4 million tonnes (up 2% m/m) and 6.9 million tonnes (roughly unchanged from last month). These revisions place the total maize production estimate at 13.3 million tonnes (up 1% m/m). When viewed annually, white maize harvest is down 25%, with yellow maize down 13% from the 2022/23 season. The expected harvest of 13.3 million tonnes is down 19% from the 2022/23 season. If it materialises, the expected harvest will be sufficient to meet South Africa's annual maize consumption of roughly 12.00 million tonnes, leaving the country with a small export volume. Still, we will likely see prices remaining elevated for some time because of the potentially tight supplies. The Southern African regional demand, particularly for white maize, also remains a significant upside driver of prices.

In its latest Essential Food Pricing Monitoring Report, released on Monday, the Competition Commission said costs across food value chains were beginning to settle, thanks in part to retailers absorbing some of the price pressure. That’s despite the impact of rolling blackouts, the deteriorating rail and port situation, the avian flu outbreak in April 2023 and global shipping disruptions caused by the conflict in the Red Sea.  READ MORE

Export opportunities for South Africa's agricultural products are opening up within BRICS+ countries. Over the past two years, China, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Egypt have widened market access for various agricultural products from South Africa. Admittedly, Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have recently joined the BRICS+ grouping, and market access is part of the long-term bilateral engagements with South Africa. South Africa has access to selected fruits, wine, wool, meat and grains. READ MORE

In Austria, frost damage was spread from the Weinviertel to Southern Styria. While many growers have mitigated damage using frost candles, the costs are substantial. According to the Austrian wine magazine Vinaria, effectively using frost candles costs approximately €6,000 per hectare. READ MORE

It is already clear, however, that many German wine-growing regions have been affected. Notably, the frost was airborne rather than ground level, which is particularly treacherous since the vines were already unusually well-developed this season.

Namibian farmers continue destocking livestock herds in the face of a looming drought and hitting record sales in March. According to Simonis Storm Securities researcher Halleluya Ndimulunde, all livestock sectors experienced an increase in marketing activities in March 2024, compared to both the previous month and March of the previous year.

The exotic avocado has increasingly become a staple on the shelves and in the diets of many countries, as its popularity has continued to rise over the years. Domestically grown avocados have seen a particular increase in interest in European countries such as Italy and Spain.

The Competition Commission’s economic research unit says that lower food inflation in South Africa is a positive sign for households in the country. However, it warns that food prices are still rising at a rate that may threaten food security.

International bank calls it quits in South Africa -BNP Paribas, the sixth-largest bank in the world, is no longer operating as a bank in South Africa.

New-vehicle sales have finally moved into positive territory following eight gruelling months of decline. Not all market segments experienced growth, however. Overall, the total new-vehicle market in April gained 2.2%, to reach 38 172 units, compared with the same month last year.

Farming is a long game that requires patience, perseverance, and strategic planning across all aspects of the operation. While every farmer understands this when it comes to tending crops and raising livestock, the same can’t always be said for managing their finances; and taking a short-sighted approach to financial planning can be as devastating to a farmer’s livelihood as a flood or drought would be to his or her operations.

“Rising incidents of crime, lingering animal disease challenges, security of electricity supply and increased geopolitical uncertainty remain top-of-mind challenges for agribusinesses.

The Competition Commission’s economic research unit says that lower food inflation in South Africa is a positive sign for households in the country. However, it warns that food prices are still rising at a rate that may threaten food security.

Class A carcass prices are expected to trade sideways with some scope for increases as exports gain momentum. This growth will however be underpinned by effective disease control.  After decreasing significantly at the end of Quarter 2 due to hot and dry conditions affecting feed prices and grazing conditions, class C and weaner calf prices are also expected to stabilise over the coming months.

Local carcass prices have recovered somewhat from the lows seen during the first quarter of the year. As with beef, this is largely driven by higher export prices with the local consumer landscape providing limited scope for significant price increases. Seasonally prices usually increase during the winter months as exports to the Middle East peak. This, combined with a lower trending supply out of Oceania (into the Middle East) could support prices over the coming months,

Following a three-month increasing trend up to November 2023, year-on-year inflation on food and NAB continued to decrease from 9.0% in November 2023 to 5.1% in March 2024. After increasing from 5.1% in December 2023, to 5.6% in February 2024, CPI headline inflation decreased marginally to 5.3% in March 2024. In March 2024 both CPI headline inflation and inflation on food and NAB were within the 3-6% inflation target bracket. Food inflation at a level lower than CPI headline inflation last occurred more than two years ago (in December 2021).
