This AGRI NEWS RUSH -Some of the news stories of this week-, SUNDAY EDITIONALWAYS ON TIME  -

News Comments  - Internationally shared - Nothing Sensational.  News platform of the commercial farmers of South Africa .

New Zealand has scrapped plans for a so-called “burp tax” aimed at lowering greenhouse gas emissions from sheep and cattle. The country’s centre-right coalition government said it would exclude agriculture from the country’s emissions trading scheme in favour of exploring other ways to reduce methane.  Livestock emissions tax: 1. A tax on farmers and ranchers based on the number of livestock they own, to encourage reductions in herd sizes or more efficient farming practices. 2 .Methane credits: A system where farmers and ranchers can earn credits for implementing methane-reducing practices, such as manure management or feed supplements. 3. Carbon pricing: A broader carbon pricing scheme that includes emissions from agriculture, such as cap-and-trade systems or carbon taxes. It just away to make money out of farmers- We live in a cruel, greedy world with very bad governments in charge .

China is facing hotter and longer heatwaves, as well as more frequent and unpredictable heavy rain as a result of climate change, the weather bureau warned. Record-breaking temperatures last month have already broiled key grain producing provinces in the northwest and east, forcing corn farmers to delay planting, while torrential rain in other regions flooded soybean and rice fields.

Extreme weather is hurting developing crops globally as the impact of climate change intensifies, with vast swathes of farmland in China, Russia, India and the United States experiencing extremely hot conditions and below-normal rainfall, squeezing world supplies and pushing prices higher. In its annual climate "Blue Book", the CMA warned that maximum temperatures across the country could rise by 1.7 to 2.8 degrees Celsius (3 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit) within 30 years, with eastern China and the northwestern region of Xinjiang set to suffer the most.

Jy moet heeltyd oor jou skouer kyk terwyl jy moet boer. Wie kan so werk? Wie kan só kos produseer?

Until now, conservancies usually received about N$60,000 (about US$3,300) as a once-off payment for the trophy hunting of a desert-adapted male lion. This, while the actual price paid by the hunter client, could go as high as N$1,25–1,5 million (US$68,950–US$82,740). When offsetting this payment against the loss in photo-tourism value over a decade and more, trophy hunting’s benefit to the conservancy becomes a pittance in real terms. READ MORE

Somewhat contrary to the recent nitrogen price trend, Ammonium sulphate prices from China dropped a few dollars this week. It seems that Chinese traders are not confident in the strength of nitrogen prices in the coming weeks and elected to chase sales volumes rather than higher prices this week. The Brazilians were also quiet in the market, which added further downward pressure on the amsul price. READ MORE

LEES MEER -

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has reported that world food commodity prices remained unchanged in June, with higher prices for vegetable oils, sugar, and dairy products balancing out lower prices for cereals.

The farmers and farmworkers across South Africa are busy in the grains-producing regions. They are harvesting maize, and things are going well. The crop quality is decent. In the week of June 28, farmers delivered 718 834 tonnes of maize to the commercial silos. This is both white and yellow maize. This volume placed the overall maize deliveries so far at 7,5 million tonnes.

Human pressure on land, soils and freshwater have intensified, pushing these resources to their production limits. Climate change has increased pressure on rain-fed and irrigation production over and above the environmental consequences of decades of unsustainable use, said the report,

As expected, the banana price decreased again to R6.29 per kilogram or R114 per 18kg box with volumes increasing by 13% week on week. We are however expecting prices to stay on a lower level during July and possibly gain some momentum from August onwards. The latest apple price decreased to R8.47 last week while the latest pear price traded lower on R9.58 per kilogram.

This week, the rand averaged R18.34/US$, weaker by 0.8% w/w but stronger by 2.6% y/y. The rand weakened on concerns over the extent of the challenges confronting the Seventh Administration. • This week’s Brent crude oil price averaged US$86.12/barrel, up by 1.6% w/w but down by 13.5% y/y. The Brent crude oil price gained support from ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, an unexpectedly large drawdown in United States (US) crude inventories, and optimistic forecasts for global fuel demand. • Although the Brent crude oil price has been increasing over the past weeks, the bullish impact of this on fuel prices has been somewhat cushioned by a general appreciation of the rand. The latest fuel price decrease (03 July 2024) came after the price of Brent crude oil remained stable while the rand strengthened. The rand has received support from the gradual return of political certainty to the South African landscape.

This week, the yellow maize price averaged R3 802/ton, down by 0.9% w/w but up by 7.4% y/y. The white maize price averaged R5 104/ton, down by 1.4% w/w but up by 46.5% y/y. Despite the weaker rand, South African maize prices traded lower from international market drivers. • Chicago maize prices traded lower due to higher-than-expected planted area estimates released by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). • In week-09 of the domestic 2024/25 maize MY, 7.5 million tons of white and yellow maize had cumulatively been delivered. In the same week, cumulative exports of white and yellow maize reached a combined 327 702 tons. • The top three export destinations of white maize were Zimbabwe (101 704 tons), Botswana (44 875 tons), and Namibia (21 216tons). The sunflower seed price averaged R8 692/ton, up by 1.5% w/w and 3.1% y/y. • The sunflower seed prices were supported by good domestic buying demand and a weaker rand. • Chicago soya bean prices had traded higher on deteriorating growing conditions in the US, but forecasts for less heat and more rainfall in areas around the US Midwest are imminent, which should pressure prices going forward. • Cumulative domestic oilseed deliveries by week-18 of the 2024/25 MY stood at 1.66 million tons of soya bean and 576 689 tons of sunflower seed.

The wheat price averaged R6 129/ton, up by 1% w/w, but down by 8.5% y/y. • The wheat prices were supported by domestic demand and a weaker rand. • In week-37 of the local 2023/24 MY, cumulative deliveries were at 1.976 million tons. • In the same week, cumulative wheat imports stood at 1.353 million tons, with 353 970 tons coming from Poland, 315 474 tons from Lithuania, and 286 163 tons from Russia, amongst others.

"Hau, just because John Steenhuisen is white doesn’t mean new-era farmers will be deserted. This week, DA leader Steenhuisen stepped into his new role as agriculture minister, replacing the beloved Thoko Didiza who has done ground-breaking work in the sector, not only being a friend to commercial farmers but also driving the black farmer development agenda. Steenhuisen’s appointment came as a big surprise, even to him, as he was aiming for deputy president in the government for national unity negotiations with the ANC. A DA agriculture minister caught many off guard, and doubly so because it is a white man". Ivor Price | Co-founder & Editor-in-Chief: Food For Mzansi  in his weekly Newsletter.
