We find ourselves in a timeframe where big data, data mining and artificial intelligence are everywhere around us. Farmers sometimes forget that they already have access to large amounts of data which they collect, sometimes unknowingly. One of the problems with most of this data is the fact that it is in "unusable" formats (i.e., paper-based or excel-spreadsheets). Building capacity to help farmers understand the technology that are already available for data-analyses or establishing interactive platforms on which they can evaluate their own data should be a priority of our generations researchers.
The world’s biggest meat and dairy companies are failing to address the environmental impact of their livestock and impeding the climate fight, according to a report from the Changing Markets Foundation. Fifteen of 22 suppliers studied have some kind of net-zero target, but none meet UN standards, found the analysis released Thursday by the nonprofit that pressures companies to cut emissions. The industry spends more on advertising than climate solutions while also lobbying against regulations, the report said Thursday. Livestock, which release potent methane, are estimated to account for some 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to straining land and water resources. Yet the agrifood industry has lagged other sectors in emissions reporting, targets and efforts.
Massive wildfires broke out in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province on 12 and 13 July 2024, killing six firefighters who were trapped in a blaze and seven other people. The same fires killed 1,600 livestock animals and burnt 14,000 hectares of land. READ MORE

Our analysis of weekly price trends on domestic fresh produce markets shows a modest rebound during midmonth as the market responded to the lingering weather-induced supply tightness emanating from the extreme freezing conditions that affected parts of Limpopo and flooding conditions in the Western Cape.
The weaner market remains relatively depressed but expert a rebound in the medium term. Weaner calf prices have been relatively depressed since the onset of the winter months due to the combination of the seasonal increase in supplies and falling demand.
The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) has upheld the ban on on the use of drones, bait-carrying remote-controlled boats and other remotely operated devices in fishing operations. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment published a public notice in 2022 warning recreational anglers that the use of drones and other electronic devices is deemed illegal under the South African Marine Living Resources Act.
Jason Davel from the Free State, who farms Île-de-France sheep, was crowned as this year’s winner of Saai’s Lamb Champs competition. He wins R80 000 cash and various other prizes, as well as a bronze trophy by the sculptor Nic van Rensburg worth R85 000.
This popular competition was held on Saturday 20 July at the Botanical Gardens in Pretoria and it was once again a huge success. This week, the rand averaged R18.12/US$, weaker by 0.1% w/w and by 2.6% y/y. The rand weakened due to risk-aversion associated with the attempted assassination of the former US president Donald Trump. Later in the week, the rand recovered ahead of the Monetary Policy Committee’s announcement to keep the repo rate unchanged at 8.25%. • This week’s Brent crude oil price averaged US$84.71/barrel, down by 0.8% w/w but up by 6.5% y/y. China’s sluggish crude oil demand outlook weighed on crude oil prices. • Relative to last month, the price of Brent crude oil has risen slightly thus far, while the exchange rate has slightly appreciated. For the remainder of this month, oil prices are expected to remain stable, and the rand should continue to appreciate slightly. As a result, on 07 August 2024, the local fuel prices (95 unleaded) could decrease by 24c/l; while 500ppm and 50 ppm diesel could decrease by 17c/l and 2c/l, respectively.
This week, the yellow maize price averaged R3 814/ton, down by 4.1% w/w but up by 6.1% y/y. The white maize price averaged R5 104/ton, down by 4.3% w/w but up by 44.5% y/y. Despite the weaker rand, South African maize prices were bearish from international market drivers. • Chicago maize futures posted some gains on bargain buying following several contracts setting new lows and several crop estimates falling in some parts of the world. • In week-11 of the domestic 2024/25 maize marketing year (MY), 8.5 million tons of white and yellow maize had cumulatively been delivered. In the same week, cumulative exports of white and yellow maize reached a combined 421 947 tons. • The top three export destinations of white maize were Zimbabwe (138 163 tons), Namibia (37 425 tons), and Mozambique (19 119 tons). The top three destinations of yellow maize were Zimbabwe (79 560 tons), Botswana (20 706 tons), and Eswatini (19 307 tons).
This week, the soya bean price averaged R8 775/ton, up by 2.6% w/w and by 3.4% y/y. The sunflower seed price averaged R8 776/ton, down by 4% w/w and by 0.6% y/y. • The soya bean prices were largely supported by good domestic buying demand and the weaker rand. • Chicago soya bean prices traded mixed despite large export sales reported by the US Department of Agriculture. Soya bean prices also showed some recovery in the previous sessions on bargain buying. This was after they fell to their lowest levels in four years due to strong US crop production prospects. • Cumulative domestic oilseed deliveries by week-20 of the 2024/25 MY stood at 1.68 million tons of soya bean and 601 996 tons of sunflower seed.
