The rerouting of shipments in the Red Sea and record corn harvests in the US are extending transit and storage times. About 40% of Asia-Europe trade normally goes through the Red Sea area. With shipments being rerouted due to geopolitical attacks, extending shipping times can allow moulds to degrade the nutrients in ingredients and produce mycotoxins. Stockpiling crops for long periods may also challenge quality assurance efforts on the farm. Speaking at the annual Selko mycotoxin review, Haladi said data inputted from across the globe meant that Selko was analysing around 1,250 analyses per week. In total in 2023, there were 66,280 observations from 35 countries, made up of 67% raw materials and 33% complete feeds. These samples included 21,601 feed samples, 16,923 grain samples, 12,383 grain by-products, 3,682 protein meals, 4,039 silage samples and 7,652 unspecific samples.

Daarby is hoenderproduksie vertikaal geïntegreer.

Over the past decade, all South Africa’s wine-producing regions have registered net declines in vineyard area but the most severe attrition has, understandably, been in the more arid regions of the Northern Cape and the Klein Karoo. In the Northern Cape, which has suffered prolonged periods of low profitability and unpredictable weather, 42.5ha of vines have been uprooted for every hectare of new vines planted on average over the past five years. In 2022, only about 5ha of vines were planted while almost 400ha were uprooted. Longer-term production trends remain negative across the industry as a whole, with tons of grapes crushed declining by a CAGR of 0.9% over the past decade. Also down since 2019 is total capital formation which encompasses fixed investment, new capital equipment and repairs and maintenance.

The movement towards organic farming is not merely a trend but a revival of the intrinsic relationship between nature and agriculture. This paradigm shift, driven by an increasing consumer cognizance of the interconnections between diet, health, and the environment, positions organic farming at the vanguard of a global transition towards more transparent and sustainable food production methodologies. Governments and regulatory bodies are also playing a significant role in promoting the use of organic fertilizers by offering subsidies, implementing organic farming policies, and encouraging farmers to adopt organic practices. Furthermore, technological advancements in organic fertilizer production and distribution are streamlining operations and making these products more accessible to farmers worldwide.

Last week’s excitement around an unexpected Indian urea tender has not yet translated into the tender being announced. In fact, it appears that the tender is likely to happen in March as originally thought – as pointed out last week, unless the Indians urgently require product now, it does not really make sense for them to buy during the present price spike as their tender would just add to rising prices. The mechanical quality of fertilizer is key for spreadability, precise application, low environmental impact, and high return on investment. In many cases, simply taking a handful of fertilizer gives a first idea: dust and crushed granules indicate low quality, while the homogeneous size and smooth surface stand for superior spreadability.

Wine tourism is emerging as a vital lifeline for the industry. Five years ago, wine tourism contributed 14.7% of cellar turnover. By 2022, this had climbed to 17.3% overall, rising to 36.3% among the industry’s 400 small and micro wine cellars.

We need good rainfall across South Africa’s summer crop regions within the next two weeks or so. The forecasts promise light showers within the next seven days, and I hope they materialise. The crop needs it. Still, our view of South Africa’s 2023/24 summer crop remains optimistic.

In the next 10 years, the agricultural drone industry will generate 100,000 jobs in the U.S. and $82 billion in economic activity, -Potential use of on-farm drones by 2050 is huge, from imagery and product application to transporting supplies and jobs not yet imagined.

Since the early 1800s, the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the Earth’s atmosphere has increased from about 275 parts per million (ppm) to over 400 ppm, and it is still rising. Plants absorb CO2 using it for plant growth through photosynthesis. Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen make up about 96% of the dry mass of plants. With more CO2 in the atmosphere, plants will grow better.

Een so mark is China.

South Africa -There are still opportunities to increase demand/consumption on the local market. We are therefore looking forward to a constructive outcome of the Section 7 process through the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) to introduce a consumer education campaign to encourage the use of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Adoption of gene-edited crop seeds is expected to increase significantly in the next 5 to 10 years, according to a Rabobank report, with adoption rates expected to surpass 50% during that period.

Scenarios are changing, proposals are urgently needed. This is what happens in the world of plant protection, as farmers have to satisfy agri-food demand by reducing the use of traditional agrochemicals, whether synthetic or otherwise.

The slogan “No Farmers No Food” is not a recent catchphrase, despite being used by European farmers in their dynamic mobilisations. It was first widely used in India in 2000 when farmers protested against the increase in fertiliser prices and agricultural supplies. It then travelled to the World Social Forum in 2001 and was adopted by agricultural organizations around the world, aiming to emphasise food security.
