Agriculture for export is an overlooked economic pillar in Africa, despite its vast potential to boost the continent’s economic growth and development. Africa is home to some of the world’s most fertile land, and its agricultural sector is a major source of employment and income for millions of people. The continent is the world’s largest exporter of cocoa beans, coffee beans and shea nuts, the second largest exporter of cotton and palm oil, and the third largest exporter of rubber and bananas. Agricultural exports are still relatively low compared to other regions of the world. In 2022, Africa accounted for just 10% of global agricultural exports, according to the World Bank. This is much lower than the shares of Asia (32%), Europe (28%) and North America (19%). The top five exporters of agricultural products in Africa in 2022 were Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, SA and Ivory Coast. Cocoa beans, cashew nuts, palm oil, rubber, coffee, wheat, corn and tea were the top agricultural products exported from Africa to the US, EU, China, India and Indonesia. The SA government has increased investment efforts towards infrastructure to boost exports of agricultural products. About R22.2bn was allocated to the department of agriculture, rural development & land reform in 2023/24 to develop and implement agricultural policies.

The EU is the top importer of SA fruit and nuts, and this is SA’s leading exportable agricultural product category in value terms. Analysis of these products therefore provides insight into what is happening to the EU’s market share compared with other regions. Fruit and nuts include pome fruit such as apples and pears, citrus such as oranges and lemons, and a variety of nuts such as almonds. In 2022 SA’s fruit and nut exports amounted to $4.45bn, an increase of 0.7% on the previous year. The EU accounted for 45% of this, followed by Asia (34%), the Americas (9%) and Africa (7%).   SA is thus aggressively seeking alternate markets, with more fruits and nuts recently being exported to Asia and the Americas. From 2003-2022 SA’s fruit and nut exports to Asia increased 758%, from $175.4m to $1.5bn, while exports to the EU increased 262%, from $547.5m to $1.9bn, and to the Americas by 475%, from $70.4m to $404.8m. Exports to Africa and all other regions increased 469% and 463% respectively. However, in value terms these remain far lower than those to the EU, Asia and the Americas.

The North African producers are all running but are seeing pries slip as European buying remains below average for this time of year. With prices slipping everywhere else, the North Africans are happy to offer the odd $5-10/t discount and keep some flow of sales to Europe and Turkey going. READ MORE

One of the most pressing issues for agribusiness is how to reduce its environmental footprint and enhance its resilience to climate change. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is an approach that aims to achieve three objectives: increase productivity, adapt to climate variability and extremes, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. CSA involves adopting practices and technologies that improve soil health, water efficiency, crop diversity, pest management, and carbon sequestration. READ MORE

Projections indicate that unless emissions are rapidly reduced the climate crisis will get substantially worse. Up to 50% of species are forecast to lose most of their suitable climate conditions by 2100 under the highest greenhouse gas emissions scenario. READ MORE

Farms that are “too white” will no longer be allowed to export to the UK and the EU.  This comes after government quietly published new rules in the Government Gazette, in terms of which farmers must meet black economic empowerment (BEE) requirements in order to obtain export permits for Europe. Only agricultural businesses with an annual turnover of less than R10 million are exempt from the requirements, but there are few export farmers who produce on such a small scale and fall below that threshold.

Climate change IS NOT the main source of biodiversity loss. The situation is alarming: since 1970, 69% of mammal, bird, fish, reptile, and amphibian populations have disappeared (WWF, 2020). The global rate of species extinction is 10 to 100 times higher than the average over the last 10 million years (IPBES, 2022).

China’s soybean buying wave supported CBOT soybean prices -Maize: CBOT corn prices decreased by 3.5% month-on-month on November 8, pressured by the U.S. harvest pace. The U.S. 2023/24 corn production is forecasted to increase by 4.2 million tons, reaching a record 386.97 million tons, putting pressure on CBOT corn prices.

The average weaner calf price continues to rise and is now trading at R34.08 per kilogram, while the average A2/3 carcass price increased to R54.09. The C-grade price increased to R47.29. Good news is that slaughter prices have already started to rise, indicating better demand. We also expect these prices to continue upward until Christmas.

In the vegetable market, the average national potato price traded sideways on R86.28 per 10kg bag with volumes still on a relatively higher level which can result in lower prices this week as well. In the fruit markets, the banana price increased slightly to R11.63 per kilogram which is 2% higher week on week. The expectation is still that these higher prices can persist until the end of the year due to lower supply. We see that apple prices are 56% higher than a year ago, trading on R12.53 while pear prices are 85% higher year on year on R13.49 per kilogram..

The urea market has been jittery for weeks and this week it was the producers/sellers who blinked first. With Northern Hemisphere buying being moderate at best and most of it being done under contract, Brazil has been the main target for spot sales. After being quiet for a few weeks while the Indian tender was running, the Brazilians returned to the market quite strongly this week.
