USDA is projecting a 3.3 million tonnes increase in corn use for ethanol, but the US Department of Energy is projecting a 2% decrease in ethanol output. Rabobank added that even the modest increase of 1.4 million tonnes in feed demand may be difficult to attain given flat poultry production, modest declines in hog and dairy cow numbers and 5% decline year-on-year in beef cattle on feed. Compared to corn, there is very little room for soybean yields to surprise to the upside, Rabobank said. Brazil will likely loom large again in the year ahead, it said, with record yields and record production. Meal prices have found support, with outstanding sales through the first week of October, proceeding at their fastest pace in five years and 50% above a year ago.
About 6-million laying hens that produce eggs for consumption were culled since the outbreak began in July. About 2.3-million broiler chickens that lay eggs for hatching were culled as part of the legislated mandatory response to tackle the airborne disease. While consumers in Gauteng and the northern provinces have faced egg shortages, the SA Poultry Association (SAPA) said they anticipated minimal chicken shortages, with none expected from 2024. They also think the outbreak has reached its peak and will begin waning. SAPA spokesman Izaak Breitenbach said chicken producers have already begun importing 83-million broiler hatching eggs to rebuild the poultry population, and the first batch arrived in October. These eggs will hatch to produce chickens destined for meat production.
Hotter temperatures linked to climate change are worsening inequality in South Africa, a new study shows. The peer-reviewed study was published in the Environmental Research Letters journal on Thursday. It shows that in South Africa, the lowest inequality levels are achieved in the temperature range of 15°C to 17°C. Breaching this threshold sees the inequality gap among different income groups widen at an increasing rate, with the livelihoods of vulnerable communities in rural areas impacted most. "The Gini coefficient in South Africa is expected to increase by three to six points, resulting in a potential welfare loss of approximately 50% when combined with the impact of warming on GDP," the report read.
Urea prices appear set to hover just below $400/t for a few weeks at least. This is unusual considering that normally this would be the high demand period for the Northern Hemisphere winter stocking programme. A lot of urea is being traded under contract but the spikes in demand that are normally evident at this time of year, which keep prices moving up, seem to be absent. A pessimistic view on crop prices is clearly not helping the demand side. READ MORE

Five years ago hardly anyone had heard about it. It is in the news nearly everyday now. This agricultural revolution has been led by innovative farmers rather than scientists, researchers and governments. It is being applied to all agricultural sectors including cropping, grazing and perennial horticulture. In previous articles we have described how regenerative agriculture maximizes the photosynthesis of plants to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to increase soil organic matter. Soil organic matter is a good proxy for soil health, as it is important for improving fertility and water capture in soils, thus improving productivity and profitability in farming. READ MORE
The quality of food and water is no longer what it was 30 years ago- The soil has no longer the amount of minerals. When you buy water, you believe that the water is mineral enriched. Stay away from all these instant drinks filled with all kinds of vitamins and minerals. It is soiled with sugar and hidden preservatives. READ MORE
Some role players, of course, are both and are termed producer-distributors (PDs) in the annual Lacto data publication by the Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO). The reader will find some of these listed later on this page (see the “Dairies and milk processors” sub-heading). In order to survive, many farmers have extended their activities beyond the farmgate and are involved in both the “field” and “fork” parts of the value chain. READ MORE

For at least the past nine years, HPAI H5 viruses of the 2.3.4.4 clade have been spread across the globe principally by wild bird migrations and infect a range of avian and mammalian species. The first recorded cases caused by viruses belonging to this clade were reported in South Africa in 2017. A second outbreak occurred in 2020. It was anticipated that the next outbreak would probably also be caused by these viruses and indeed the first reported cases of HPAI in 2023 in the coastal regions were associated with H5 strains. Local experts are working on the theory that the present outbreak of H7N6 HPAI was created when a low pathogenicity AI (LPAI) virus circulating without causing disease in wild birds underwent a mutation to become an HPAI strain adapted to causing serious disease in chickens. This mutation occurred locally. READ MORE
