Economist Roelof Botha says South African mortgage bond holders pay R4,000 per month more than they should for no reason. On 20 July, The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) paused interest rate hikes, keeping the repo rate at 8.25% and the prime lending rate at 11.75%. The pause followed ten interest rate increases since November 2021, with the SA Reserve Bank implementing a cumulative 475 basis points of hikes, SARB governor Lesetja Kganyago remained hawkish and warned that it might not be the end of interest rate hikes. Botha slated the Reserve Bank’s previous decisions and Kganyago’s latest comments, saying he is disgusted with the central bank. He said the SARB’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is repeating its mistakes in 2015 when former governor Gill Marcus stepped down. He said Marcus understood that South Africa’s inflation rate is volatile and could move in and out of the target range. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will experience more pressure from the African National Congress (ANC) and other politicians as the government benefits from high inflation.  Efficient Group chief economist Dawie Roodt said that he is concerned about inflation rising in the coming years due to government pressure on the SARB.

SA has asked the US to consider an early extension to the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa), saying this would provide certainty for investors and encourage them to commit additional investment on the continent. Trade, industry & competition minister Ebrahim Patel said the expeditious renewal trade agreement, which gives SA and other sub-Saharan African countries preferential access to US markets, would be beneficial not only for SA, but also Africa’s industrialisation. In its written submissions to the US trade representative, submitted on July 7 in support of SA’s Agoa bid, trade union federation Cosatu accuses SA’s government of mishandling geopolitical fallout with the US after Washington’s ambassador to SA, Reuben Brigety, accused SA of supplying arms to Russia to support its war with Ukraine.

The global population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion people by 2050. So, in order to feed our growing world sustainably, increased crop production is essential. Over recent decades, farmers have been able to more than double their production of crops thanks to fertilizers and the vital nutrients they contain.  READ MORE

They were, they had told her, avoiding alcohol for health reasons. Jung considered the problem. She proposed that the family try an experiment. Why not dealcoholize their wines in the distillery they also operated? Within a few years, the estate was making the world’s first non-alcoholic wines under a patented process.  This is not, however, the story of an innovative winery responding to modern wellness culture. The year was 1900, and the place was Rüdesheim am Rhein, Germany.  READ MORE

Another reason for why is wheat bad for you revolves around gluten. Gluten has become quite a buzz word lately. Gluten is made up of the two proteins: gliadin and glutenin. It’s the glue that holds your bread together and gives it it’s elastic properties. For the 1% of individuals in the United States which have celiac disease, this is the protein that causes a major problem.Celiac disease is just one outcome of being intolerant of gluten, however.

Wildlife trafficking can be split in two: wildlife product trafficking (ivory, rhino horn, pangolin and pangolin products), which generally flows from Africa to Asia in a “broad supply chain that narrows substantially as it approaches its end” and live animal trafficking (reptiles, birds, marine species and mammals), “widely dispersed through the world without a clearly definable supply chain”.

Grain supply increase assures food supply, amid WASDE forecast revision. Maize: CBOT corn saw a 6.0% increase week-on-week. Prices were supported by persisting forecasted dry conditions in the USA after receiving low levels of rain.

Following an eleven-month increase, inflation on food and non-alcoholic beverages dropped for a third month, to 11.0% - slightly lower than inflation levels last observed in August 2022. The FAO Food Price Index, based on the prices of an international basket of food commodities, was 20.9% lower in June 2023 compared to June 2022, showing a declining trend since April 2022.

Agriculture bags are available in a plethora of sizes to choose from and are used for storage, packaging and shipping of materials in bulk. These bags are manufactured with woven polypropylene fabric. The demand for these bags has witnessed a moderate CAGR growth from 2016 to 2020.

While there are renewed risks in global agriculture, such as India’s ban on rice exports and the termination of the Black Sea Grain Initiative that facilitated grains and oilseeds exports from Ukraine, South Africa’s consumer food inflation should continue to slow during this second half of the year.

A new study finds larger organic farms use fewer sustainable practices than smaller organic farms. Organic fruit and vegetable sales represent 15% of all U.S. retail produce sales. While large farms in the organic market could drive prices down and expand access, the use of fewer sustainable could reduce confidence in the organic label, the authors said.
