Weekly summary of some News in the  Agri and Farming media.   GET YOUR MARKETING on this Page -

South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe have recently published reports indicating a potential decline in grain harvest because of intense El Niño-induced dryness. These developments could put the entire Southern African maize supply chain at risk, with Zambia and South Africa hard hit by heatwaves and dryness. The neighbouring small producers such as Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Namibia are also struggling with dryness.  Given that South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe are among the largest maize producers within the Southern Africa region, a potential decline in the harvest in these countries suggests there could be an increase in the risk of food insecurity. This would necessitate imports to meet the shortfall in the region’s maize supplies.

United States’ import volumes at the country’s major container ports has increased as the supply chain adjusts to ongoing Houthi rebel attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. This is according to the latest Global Port Tracker report data released by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates, which shows annual growth in volumes in January 2024. Cargo has been rerouted and goods are arriving where they are needed and in time to meet consumer demand despite the ongoing challenges. Retailers have been impacted by costs and shipping delays, but they are working to minimise any impact on consumers.” Carriers were avoiding the Red Sea and the initial surge in shipping prices and delays was subsiding, said Hackett Associates Founder, Ben Hackett. Some cargo that previously travelled from Asia via the Red Sea and Suez Canal across the Atlantic to the US East Coast is now going around the Cape of Good Hope instead. There has been an uptick in cargo shipped across the Pacific to the West Coast and some ships are travelling across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal to reach the East Coast.

The FAO Food Price Index which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of a set of globally traded food commodities, averaged 117.3 points in February, down 0.7% from January and 10.5% from the same month a year ago. The cereal price index decreased by 5.0% in February to reach a level 22.4% below that of February 2023. Maize export prices dropped the most amid expectations of large harvests in South America and competitive prices offered by Ukraine, while international wheat prices declined mostly due to a strong export pace from the Russian Federation. International rice prices also declined, by 1.6% in February. The vegetable oil price index decreased by 1.3% from January to stand 11% below its February 2023 value. International soyoil prices dropped markedly, underpinned by prospects of abundant soybean outputs in South America, while ample global export availabilities of sunflower and rapeseed oils pushed their prices down. World palm oil prices rose marginally in February due to seasonally lower production.

Outstanding articles of the week.

“South Africa anticipates a slightly larger grape harvest in 2024 than in the previous year, which yielded less than 10m hectolitres. Will this put pressure on the prices?” “The wine-growing area in South Africa continues to shrink. Within 10 years, it has decreased by 10%. How can this decline be stopped?” READ MORE

According to the FAO's comprehensive analysis, female-headed households lose an average of eight percent more income from heat stress and three percent more from flooding than male-headed households. This disparity is further illuminated when considering the potential impact of a one-degree Celsius average temperature increase, which would result in a 34% higher total income loss for women. Russia and Belarus are two of the world’s biggest producers of potash, exporting around 42% of the world’s potash supply. However, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in March 2022, the UK, US, Canada, and the EU imposed import sanctions on both countries, disrupting global supplies and exacerbating the price spike. Understood in this frame, “land expropriation without compensation” really is a red herring. It has been weaponised to scare South Africans away from each other, rather than bringing us together. The truth is that any functional state must be able to have this mechanism, and in South Africa, as everywhere else, it has always been used: for dams, highways, and other strategic priorities.  READ MORE

On 11 March 2024, the Gauteng Division of the High Court of South Africa delivered a significant victory for the Southern African Agri Initiative (SAAI) and, by extension, for transparency and accountability within our national institutions.

THE need to invest in the growth, sustainability and innovation of South African agriculture has never been more critical. Often a focus is placed on infrastructure and production investment – for instance, in roads, rail, ports, farm-level innovation and technological advances –.....

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) announced that it was currently investigating Clover (PTY) Ltd for alleged contraventions of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). This comes after the dairy company informed the NCC that it has recalled 10 776 units of 400g of Go Nuts peanut butter following numerous tests that revealed higher levels of aflatoxin.

President Cyril Ramaphosa noted on Monday that Eskom, under the leadership of its new Group CEO, is finalising an agreement with business to deploy additional independent skilled experts to support the ailing power utility.

For the seventh consecutive month in February, world food commodity price benchmarks have declined as lower international prices for all major cereals more than offset rising sugar and meat prices, according to the latest report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
