The damaging effects of persistent dryness and heatwave in South Africa's summer crop-growing regions have raised concerns about a possible rise in consumer food inflation in the coming months. With South Africa's food price inflation averaging 11% in 2023 (from 9.5% in 2022, 6.5% in 2021, and 4.8% in 2020) , which was relatively high compared with recent periods, talk of further upside pressure in inflation comes as an unwelcome development. However, the underlying drivers of the increase in food inflation in the past two years were mainly the international agricultural commodity prices and, to a much lesser extent, idiosyncratic domestic factors. Still, towards the latter part of 2023, local factors such as animal diseases, weaker domestic currency, and load-shedding-related osts were some of the key drivers of food inflation.

Climate impacts, said the report, are already clear in SA, and will worsen as the global temperature rises. Even in low-emission, optimistic scenarios where global warming is limited to 2°C, heat waves are projected to become hotter and more frequent, raising the risk of deadly heat stress. Similarly, severe droughts will happen more frequently. In SA this will manifest as warmer drier conditions across the country. At the same time, in eastern SA, including parts of KwaZulu-Natal, heavy rainfall is projected to increase, making the region more prone to flooding. These extreme weather events are likely to damage crops and infrastructure and threaten plants and animals that attract tourism. The impacts of climate change are likely to affect livelihoods, food and water security and ultimately increase the cost of living.

The Southern African Agri Initiative (Saai) and C5 Capital, a pioneering investment firm based in Washington DC specialising in advanced nuclear energy solutions, announced a groundbreaking strategic partnership today. This alliance aims to spearhead the development of innovative nuclear solutions to bolster agriculture and ensure food security across South Africa and the wider African continent. Despite the reduced volume of wine leaving South Africa’s shores last year, prices of the country’s wine have in fact shot up by 22% for bottled wine, and 20% for bulk. The real reason for this, explains Thompson, is that fewer entry-level white wines were exported, while premium wines in higher price brackets saw an uptick. The needle is moving in the right direction, but producers will need to hold fast to their premiumisation strategy if they are to weather the political storm this year. READ MORE

The US exported 587.8 million lbs. of pork during January. While that was down 56.1 million lbs. (8.7%) from December, which was the highest monthly tally since May 2021, pork shipments increased 32.0 million lbs. (5.8%) from January 2023. USDA raised its 2024 pork export forecast and now expects a 4.8% increase to 7.130 billion pounds. READ MORE
