South Africa recorded a preliminary trade balance surplus of R10.5-billion in April, the South African Revenue Services (Sars) reports. This surplus is attributed to exports of R169.5-billion and imports of R159.1-billion, inclusive of trade with Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia (BELN). The year-to-date (January 1 to April 30) preliminary trade balance surplus of R26.6-billion was an improvement from the R6.7-billion trade balance surplus for the comparable period in 2023.On a year-on-year basis, export flows for April of R169.5-billion were 4.2% higher compared with R162.7-billion recorded in April 2023, while import flows were 0.8% higher having increased from R157.8-billion in April 2023 to R159.1-billion in the current period.
Parading fake cows painted in the colours of the European flag, the protesters congregated outside the headquarters of the European Parliament and the European Commission on Monday, 27 May. In an interview with Euronews, Kjartan Poulsen, president of the European Milk Board, said the protesters wanted “an EU-wide version of a Spanish law on ‘unfair commercial practices’, which forbids selling ‘products below cost at all stages of the purchasing chain”. According to the president of the Po Valley Milk Producers’ Association, Roberto Cavaliere, in some countries, such as Italy, the gap between production costs and selling prices was even greater than the European average, Euronews reported. “On average, the costs of an Italian company are around 60c/ℓ to 65c/ℓ. Currently, Italian producers earn 50c/ℓ. We still have a gap of 15c. We ask for a fair price because the prices paid to producers over the last 25 years have never covered production costs,” Cavaliere said.

Ford’s Silverton manufacturing plant, in Pretoria, is one of five global manufacturing hubs for the Ranger bakkie. The plant is able to produce up to 200 000 vehicles a year and, based on three-shift 24-hour production, it is capable of producing up to 720 vehicles a day – or one vehicle every two minutes. There are around 3 000 to 4 000 spot welds in the body of every single Ranger, and corrosion protection is provided by dipping the body in 12 chemical baths prior to painting. Every Ranger is covered with about eight litres of Ford’s 3-Wet High Solids Paint system.

Forests harbour 80% of the world's terrestrial plant and animal species, help to mitigate climate change and provide shelter, livelihoods, water, food and fuel security for 2 billion people around the world. Despite their significance to life as we know it, forests are disappearing at a rapid rate. In the past 30 years, we have lost more than 1.3 million square kilometres of forests -
As Zimbabwe faces its worst drought in 40 years, Farai Shawn Matiashe speaks to farmers about the barriers to climate resilience. Margaret Mutasa, a smallholder farmer, stares at her children picking yellow-green guavas from the fields in Watsomba, a rural area in Zimbabwe’s Manicaland Province.
The Southern Hemisphere has taken over the kiwi supply as their harvesting has begun. For South Africans, it seems to be a difficult campaign. The campaign in New Zealand finally seems to be more positive after multiple years of challenges being thrown at the growers and exporters.
The South African farmers and workers in the maize-growing regions are busy with the harvest season. There was already good progress in the first four weeks of this new marketing year. For example, farmers delivered to commercial silos 3,2 million tonnes of maize in the first four weeks of May, the new marketing year – 2024/24.
It’s 2030, and the world is on the brink of collapse. Governments and corporations have spent decades running large climate conferences, signing complicated treaties to decarbonize the economy, believing it is the only way to solving the climate crisis. Yet, temperatures continue to rise, droughts and floods become so frequent that normal life is a thing of the past. Ecosystems collapse everywhere, food prices soar.
The loss of tropical forests is often in the news. We see pictures of barren land next to forest, of chainsaws, of bulldozers. Depressing images. These new items generate frustration and anger, among politicians, conservationists, scientists and many more.
