While South Africa's agriculture has had a rough start to the year, characterised by El Niño-induced drought, the employment conditions remain encouraging. The data recently released by Stats SA shows that employment in primary agriculture lifted by 6% year-on-year to 941,000 in the first quarter of 2024. This is also up 2% from the last quarter of 2023. Admittedly, the significant drought damage has been concentrated on the summer grains and oilseed regions, not across all agricultural subsectors, which somewhat explains the resilience in job data. Another consideration is that there could also be a lag in fully accounting for agriculture's financial pressures resulting from the drought and the affect on employment afterwards.
The DALRRD should continue finalising the Land Reform and Agricultural Development Agency. This agency will help release the roughly 2,5-million hectares of land in the State Land Holding Account to beneficiaries, among other tasks. The agency will also implement the beneficial selection criteria for such land. This land can potentially improve the inclusiveness and growth of the agricultural sector and employment possibilities. There may be a need for collaboration with various implementing agencies at different stages of the land release process. The DALRRD has championed this work and should see it to completion in the next administration. Blended finance could also be aligned with this work.

Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.
Sustainability is a primary concern for many around the world today, but we’re still working on getting things right in the agricultural industry. While some important changes have been made, there is still a long way to go. Some in the industry have pinned their hopes on organic farming as the answer that will help us feed the growing population well into the future, but is it? READ MORE
Before 1994, rural areas, especially former Bantustan regions, were neglected, leading to economic stagnation. Post-1994, the government prioritized rural development through initiatives like the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP). The RDP aimed to improve living conditions and promote smallholder farming to ensure affordable food production. READ MORE
The collaboration between Transnet, organized business and agriculture sector stakeholders to improve efficiency at South African ports must continue. Efficient logistics are the lifeblood of South African agriculture and other exporting sectors of the economy. Admittedly, the deciduous fruit industry faced numerous challenges at the port of Cape Town at the start of this year related to delays that proved costly to farming businesses. READ MORE
Internationally, major cuts in cheap Black Sea wheat suppliers like Russia (-3.5mmt) and Ukraine (-2mmt) are partially offset by increases in Australia (+3mmt), Canada (+2mmt), and US (+1.3mmt). Ending stockpiles are seen falling 4.2m tons YOY to 253.6mmt, a 9-year low. READ MORE

The 2023/24 soybean harvest was lowered by 2% from last month to 1,7 million tonnes (down 36% y/y). This annual decline results from lower yields in various regions of South Africa. We now believe South Africa may not play a robust position in soybean exports like the previous season. If anything, soybean oilcake imports this new season are now a possibility.
As South Africa heads to the polls today, the dire state of the country is more in focus than ever as we mark 30 years of democracy. Front-of-mind for the agriculture community is whether the mounting pressure on creating a more enabling environment for the sector will be realised after the election.
While 2024 has brought some relief to the road freight sector, ongoing challenges persist, driving up costs and increasing tension. Addressing delegates at the annual Road Freight Association (RFA) conference in Hermanus over the weekend, RFA CEO Gavin Kelly said the trucking industry remained under pressure, operating in tough economic times.

As we commemorate Africa Month, it’s imperative to recognise the pivotal role of the beer industry in propelling the continent’s economic growth, particularly through initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Amidst global economic challenges, Africa stands resilient, poised to outperform established economies and offering a promise of renewed economic growth.
Wine industry leaders, stakeholders, and media gathered at the inaugural South Africa Wine Summit at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on 23 May to discuss the future of the South African wine industry. The message was clear: focus, believe, and implement strategies to seize opportunities, position SA wine as a leader in sustainability, and drive long-term growth and resilience.
The alleged wide-scale deliberate sabotage of Eskom’s power stations and other infrastructure appears to have all but disappeared in recent months. The power utility frequently bemoaned the impact of alleged acts of deliberate damage to its equipment on its ability to keep the lights on in 2021 and 2022.
A stronger ZAR and load-shedding reprieve could firm up demand. Beef -We see the potential for modest upward price trends across beef categories. This is underpinned by the reduction in load-shedding and a stronger ZAR which could alleviate some of the pressures on consumer income. The stronger ZARs main effect on consumer disposable income would be felt in lower fuel costs.
