South Africa has cracked the top ten of the world’s most beautiful countries to visit, according to a new ranking by online trip-planning company Rough Guides. New Zealand, has been voted as the world’s most beautiful after narrowly beating last year’s number 1, Italy. The annual ranking was determined by votes from readers across the globe and is aimed to identify the world’s top 20 most beautiful countries. It considered various categories determined by voters, such as the landscapes, culture, people, architecture, food, and much more. The countries which made up Rough Guides’ 20 – 11 rankings are: 20 – Japan 19 – Slovenia 18 – Portugal 17 – Indonesia 16 – India 15 – Croatia 14 – Argentina 13 – Iceland 12 – Chile 11 – United States of America.

April marked the end of SA’s 2023-24 marketing year for maize. This marketing year corresponds with the 2022-23 production season, as the crop harvested midyear in 2023 was marketed from then to end-April. According to data from the crop estimates committee of the department of agriculture, forestry & fisheries, the 2022-23 production season was characterised by an excellent harvest of 16.4-million tonnes. This was on the back of large plantings and the favourable summer rainfall that boosted the yields. The ample harvest allowed SA to maintain its position in export markets as the world’s ninth-largest maize exporter, trailing the US, Brazil, Argentina, Ukraine, Romania, France, Paraguay and Poland. Data from the SA Grains Information Services shows that in the 2023-24 marketing year, the exports amounted to 3.4-million tonnes, down 6% from the previous year. About 63% of the exported maize was yellow, with 37% being white maize. In the past, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan were the leading markets for SA’s maize exporters. But in the 2023-24 marketing year Zimbabwe took the lion’s share of the exports, accounting for 18% of the 3.4-million tonnes exported.

Four in five people believe the government is not doing enough to address corruption, according to a new Corruption Watch report. The nonprofit organisation says the report reveals a clear demand for stricter consequences for any corrupt behaviour of government officials. The Impact of Corruption: Insights From a Perceptions and Experiences Survey questioned 1 500 respondents in all provinces and assessed the profound impact of corruption on people’s lives.  Findings in the report revealed a lack of confidence in the efficacy and ability of law enforcement agencies to tackle corruption. It reported that 81% believed the government was not doing enough to address corruption in the provision of basic services. “More than half of the respondents [73%] agreed corruption mostly affects the provision of housing and land, safety and protection of communities [69%], the provision of quality education [68%], access to quality health care [67%], the administering of justice by courts [64%] and food security [62%],” the report noted. Corruption is part of life in South Africa- Regarding interactions with officials in relation to corruption, the report said 24% of 600 to 700 respondents had admitted to giving a “gift”, or doing a favour for police officers, car licence officers (23%) or traffic management officials (23%). Look at all the so called Millionares - all corrupt- Thieves in every way.

Cow methane, although emitted in smaller quantities, has a stronger warming effect compared to carbon dioxide. Over the past 100 years, carbon dioxide has caused the highest warming effect, followed by methane and nitrous oxide. Despite methane's shorter lifespan in the atmosphere, its radiative forcing capability makes efforts to reduce cow methane crucial.

S&P Global Ratings has retained SA’s foreign currency rating at BB- with a stable outlook. The decision was expected by most analysts with Nedbank economist Isaac Matshego and Investec chief economist Annabel Bishop both saying earlier on Friday: “We expect no change.”  S&P last downgraded SA’s rating in April 2020 to three rungs below investment grade as the world was thrust into the Covid-19 pandemic and global economic activity ground to a near halt. The next scheduled review from S&P is in November. It can however change a rating at any time.

Why banks in South Africa will soon want a closer look at your accounts -South African banks continue to battle social engineering, with more than half of the respondents of a recent industry survey saying Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud is their greatest cause for concern.

Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has increased the volumes of goods handled across its ports in the first six weeks of the 2024/2025 financial year.
