Weekly summary of some News in the  Agri and Farming media.   GET YOUR MARKETING on this Page -

While South Africa's agriculture has had a rough start to the year, characterised by El Niño-induced drought, the employment conditions remain encouraging. The data released by Statistics South Africa today shows that employment in primary agriculture lifted by 6% year-on-year to 941 000 in the first quarter of 2024. This is also up 2% from the last quarter of 2023. Admittedly, the significant drought damage has been concentrated on the summer grains and oilseed regions, not across all agricultural subsectors, which somewhat explains the resilience in job data. Moreover, there could also be a lag in fully accounting for agriculture's financial pressures and the impact on employment after that.

Angola has emerged as one of the big winners from last week’s US-Africa Business Summit held in Dallas, Texas, where it was announced that Africa Finance Corporation will invest €381.5 million in upgrading the country’s road network. The Nigeria-based investment bank will make available €85 million of the total capital expenditure (capex), while it is understood that the Export-Import Bank of the US and the US Private Export Funding Corporation have committed to the lion’s share of the rest. Standard Chartered Bank, Portuguese civil engineering firm Conduril and US bridge construction company, Acrow, are the remaining capex partners. Upgrading of Angola’s dilapidated road network is said to be concentrated around the Lobito Corridor connecting Angola’s port on the Benguela coast with the Copperbelt in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). A total of 186 bridges, many of which are either non-existent or in a bad state of disrepair, will form part of the extensive project.

The South African poultry industry has called on Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza, to implement a process to streamline access to vaccinations against the H7N6 strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). The SA Poultry Association (Sapa) made the call this week as the industry struggles to recover from significant losses incurred, including the culling of 9.5 million birds, due to outbreaks of avian flu across the country. The industry is sounding the alarm for immediate intervention to avert another catastrophic outbreak. Traditionally reliant on a stamping out policy, the industry acknowledges the inefficiency of this approach against the H7N6 strain,” Sapa said. “With no compensation mechanism in place for culled birds, producers shoulder the heavy burden of financial losses, including the costs associated with cleaning infected premises and restocking farms.”

Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.

Green electrons and green molecules are presenting South Africa with a massive opportunity to reindustrialise, Nedbank CIB head of infrastructure, energy and telecommunications Mike Peo told the Green Hydrogen Roundtable on Monday.

The kiwi shortage that South Africa and its neighbors experience this time of the year could be a thing of the past when Chilean kiwis receive import approval, which the industry expects could be within six months or a year.

On May 10, the United States Department of Agriculture released its flagship monthly report — the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. This report is keenly observed monthly by the agricultural market participants worldwide. It provides annual forecasts for supply and use of maize, wheat, rice, soybeans, sunflower seed, cotton and other grains and oilseeds.

Earlier last week, the Competition Commission released its latest edition of the Essential Food Pricing Monitoring (EFPM) quarterly report. In this report, which details are now available on our website www.compcom.co.za, the commission gives a low-down of how consumers swiftly turned to canned pilchard, substituting beef and chicken as traditional sources of protein.

We received lots of messages from all over  - enjoying this weekly update of Farming and Agriculture NEWS -Die res van al die stories kan jy lees by  www.agrinewsnet.co.za-   Geen medium in Landbou gee jou soveel nuus by een adres - 7 dae per week- 365 dae van die jaar-
