Government is seeking to finalise a plan aimed at improving its rail network and move cargo away from its overburdened roads.  While the economy loses a billion rand per day to its logistics crises, government has said an urgent turnaround is needed to improve its 31 000km locomotive network as more and more cargo moves from rail to trucks.  Around a third of long-distance freight has moved from rail to roads within five years (226-million tonnes in 2017/18 to 149.5-million tonnes in 2022/23), with businesses increasingly relying on trucks to transport their cargo nationwide.  Currently, 87% of freight is moved by truck, causing increased congestion and road infrastructure damage.

Global poultry farming faces one of the biggest challenges in its history due to a prolonged and widespread avian influenza pandemic.… avian influenza has already decimated hundreds of flocks worldwide, generated trading barriers, and, therefore, threatens the global supply of one of the most accessible proteins. Avian influence does not transfer to meat, so the meat remains healthy. But many countries still block international commerce due to the precautionary principle. Debates cross borders with everyone focused on improving production. For example, the issue of avian influenza banned the trade in genetics. That is my priority: moving forward with regional compartmentalisation to ensure that the poultry industry around the globe does not run out of genetic material.

Africa is home to about 410,000 savannah elephants (Loxodonta Africana), most of them living in Southern Africa. More than 290,000 elephants (70%) are spread across 103 protected areas which vary in size, connectivity and protection. In a recent research paper we explored how elephant populations across Southern Africa performed under different conservation approaches. This work formed part of the Conservation Ecology Research Unit at the University of Pretoria, where we focus on science-based, cost-effective approaches to elephant management. Our study was the most comprehensive analysis of growth for any large mammal population globally and covered an area of 320,000km².

Roads have been blocked across France, manure and agricultural waste dropped outside public offices, and bales of hay spread through fast food restaurants. It started last year when farmers began unscrewing road signs and putting them back upside down. Most of the major Urea benchmark prices moved up further this week. There were no major fireworks as prices rose $5-10/t in most regions. Prices in the destination markets such as Brazil and the USA moved up more significantly to reflect the higher origin prices, as well as higher freight. Buying activity was greater this week, which indicates growing acceptances these higher prices. It is normal for there to be strong demand at this time of year as the Northern Hemisphere gears up for spring planting. READ MORE

There is general agreement that South Africa needs 60 000 MW of new capacity over ten years – about 6 000 MW per year. The Presidential Climate Commission, for example, recommended 50 000 to 60 000 MW of new renewable capacity over ten years, plus 3 000 to 5 000 MW of new gas. But for the seven years to 2030 IRP 23 only provides for a total of 28 000 MW to be added, leaving a shortfall of 22 000 to 32 000 MW. For a country in an electricity crisis, this is wholly visionless and without urgency. READ MORE

Millets aren’t complicated, which is surprising given the sheer scope and variety available from continent to continent. Millets – tough, versatile, and often underutilized – are a highly varied family of small-seed grasses grown as cereal crops, animal feed, and human food. Similar to oats in many ways, millets can be a rich source of antioxidants and essential amino acids. READ MORE

Did you know that leopards on honeymoon may mate as much as 256 times in four days? But, even with this radical number, these honeymoons are not always successful in producing offspring. One study found that only 28% of adult female leopards in the Kruger National Park gave birth per year. Little comprehensive research has taken place on the mating habits of leopards, as they are elusive and difficult to study. This also means obtaining a reliable population count of leopards is notoriously challenging, if not impossible. Which is why we recently asked Botswana’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks how they calculated the trophy hunting quota of 90 leopards for 2024. We are still waiting for a response and will keep you posted.

Urea vs. Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) for Top Dressing -In the realm of top-dressing fertilizers, the choice between Urea and Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) is a decision that demands careful consideration. Let's explore the advantages and disadvantages of each:

Global business leaders are more positive about economic growth over the next 12 months compared to their outlook a year ago, the latest PwC Global CEO survey has found.

— A weak tone in world wheat markets persisted into 2024, although there were some bullish reactions to cold weather across the Northern Hemisphere in the closing weeks of January. US Wheat Associates (USW) in its Jan. 19 Weekly Price Report noted that wheat was lower as a lack of supportive news has allowed bearish trends to continue.
