Weekly summary of some News in the Agri and Farming media.
South Africa's consumer food inflation slowed to 8,5% in December 2023, from 9,0% in the previous month (and against our expectations of a slight uptick to 9,3%). The product prices underpinning this deceleration were primarily bread and cereals; oils and fats; and vegetables. We expect this moderation path to continue in 2024 for most of the products within the food basket.
At COP28 in Dubai, most world leaders agreed to work together to triple our collective installed renewable energy capacity to at least 11 000 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. In a new report, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says the world added 510GW of new renewables capacity in 2023 – a 50% jump from the year before, thanks largely to our biggest BRICS ally: China. The undisputed leader in renewable energy deployments, China will have an astounding 1 200GW of installed solar and wind capacity by the end of this year, according to the IEA. That’ll be complemented by more than 300GW of storage capacity, according to estimates based on what’s in the pipeline.
The heavy rains, strong winds and hail which swept through KZN recently have left dairy farmers with severe infrastructural damage to roads. As such dairy supply chain logistics and operation have been disrupted. Industry stakeholders have called for urgent, united action in attending to concerns. Following 6 weeks of heavy rains, severe thunder and lightning storms with torrential winds and hail in KwaZulu-Natal, dairy farmers and food service providers have been left to cope with aftermath of severe infrastructural damage to roads hindering logistics and operations. David de Jager, CEO of Tip-Top Milk, SA’s leading milk logistics and testing company, says that the extensive damage to farm roads is making it difficult to reach farmers to collect their milk, resulting in a disruption to the supply chain.
There is a widely shared consensus that while the government has made strides in returning land to communities displaced by repressive apartheid policies, the overall progress in the land reform program has been slow. According to the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights (CRLR), a total of 82,976 land claims lodged before the cut-off date of 30 December 1998 have been settled. This translates to 3.8 million hectares benefiting 2.3 million beneficiaries, with the allocation of R22 billion to those who opted for financial compensation, R25 billion for the acquisition of land, and R5 billion for grants. Farmers are nowadays able to improve yields and quality, and optimise their inputs whilst reducing labour, all thanks to technologies including remote sensing, precision seeding, in-field sensors, drones, robotics and satellites which can be used to measure soil conditions, plant health, manage water and nutrition and monitor crops. The Chinese-built railway is a prime example of China-Africa cooperation in infrastructure. Statistics showed that since the FOCAC was founded, Chinese companies have built or upgraded more than 10,000 km of railways, nearly 100,000 km of roads, roughly 1,000 bridges and 100 ports in African countries. The South African agricultural sector has done reasonably well over the past three decades, having doubled in value and volume terms. The exports reached record levels of US$12,8 billion in 2022, with employment also at the highest levels since the early 1990s, at 956 000 in the third quarter of 2023. The country has also improved its food security conditions, ranked 59th out of 113 countries in The Economist's Global Food Security Index, making it the most food secure in sub-Saharan Africa and reflecting the increase in agricultural output. Uitvoerders in buurlande vermy toenemend Suid-Afrika se ondoeltreffende spoor- en hawelogistiek.
