In reality, 99 percent of the 9.7 billion land animals raised for food in the US every year live in brutish conditions on factory farms, where they’re mutilated without pain relief, crammed together in warehouses, and forced to wallow in their own waste. Many are drugged up on antibiotics to survive these conditions, and they’ve been bred to grow bigger, faster, and pump out more eggs and milk, all to the detriment of their welfare. Global commitments for this decade add up to a cut in emissions of carbon and other greenhouse gases of just 11 percent, well below the cuts of between 25 percent and 50 percent needed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050, IMF research shows.

Africa is facing a food crisis the likes of which it has never experienced before, with 282 million people undernourished, and a sharp increase expected next year, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said in a new report. This effectively means the continent is far off track to achieve "zero hunger for 2030", a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG2). At this stage, the report said, there was no chance for the continent to also achieve the 2025 target for the Malabo Declaration of ending hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2025. "About 868 million people were moderately or severely food-insecure, and more than one-third of them — 342 million people — were severely food-insecure," the report said.

The Blue Drop report is perhaps the most damning, as it indicated that almost half of the country's drinking water is of poor quality. In 2014, 44 water supply systems received the Blue Drop status, while only 26 could meet the criteria in 2023. This represents a negative trend of nearly 41% over a period of 9 years. READ MORE

From January through September, Earth’s average global surface air temperature was about 1.1 degrees Celsius (nearly 2 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than the 20th century average of 14.1° C (57.5° F). June, July, August, September and October were each the hottest ever recorded for those months — and September was hotter than an average July from 2001 to 2010. The year isn’t out yet, but temperatures so far suggest 2023 has a greater than 99 percent chance of being the hottest year on record, according to the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Information. The Mississippi River, Illinois River and Ohio River are the primary waterways for moving agricultural products by barge in the United States. This year in South Africa’s agriculture there are two dominating views about the outlook for 2024. With El Nino underway, one side fears that the drought could undermine agricultural production this year, although not in equal proportion as in the 2015/16 harsh El Nino years.

As usual, when GDP statistics were released this week, there were various analyses of what this means for South Africa. The obvious interpretation of an economy growing at less than the country’s population growth, which is captured in GDP per capita, is that South Africans are getting poorer.
