After slowing for six consecutive months, South Africa's consumer food inflation quickened to 8,8% in October 2023, from 8,0% in the previous month. The product prices underpinning this increase were mainly milk, eggs and cheese; fruit; and vegetables. For all these products, the recent price rises will likely be a temporary blip. They are a reaction to brief supply constraints in the past few months. The avian influenza was the main issue behind the eggs supply constraints, which remain a challenge although not as acute as we saw in September and October. Regarding the vegetables, potatoes were mainly the driver of the prices in the basket as the harvest was limited following quality challenges caused by irrigation disruptions in some fields due to load-shedding in much of the year's first half.
President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled SA’s R1.5-trillion Just Energy Transition Investment Plan at the COP27 climate conference in 2022. It was developed to set out the actions and platforms needed to ensure the transformation of the energy sector and the establishment of electric vehicle and green hydrogen industries to the benefit of affected communities. The plan highlights how SA’s fiscal constraints and Eskom’s bailout conditions are hindering access to finance that has been pledged by financial institutions to support, among other things, the decommissioning of coal-fired power stations. In addition, the government’s plan to delay the decommissioning of coal plants that will reach the end of their life in the next five years puts at risk highly concessional financing that has been offered to SA specifically for decommissioning.
International trade is at the heart of SA’s agricultural success. For this reason any disruptive legislative and logistical constraints to exports constrain the sector’s growth and are cause for concern. Equally, the differences in the interpretation of export-related legislation by industry leaders versus regulators could have adverse effects on the sector or dent sentiment. Maize, wine, grapes, citrus, berries, nuts, apples and pears, sugar, avocados and wool were some of the top exportable products in 2022, spread across various key markets. Africa remained a leading market, accounting for 37% of SA’s agricultural exports in 2022. Asia was the second largest, accounting for 27% of exports, followed by the EU at 19%. The Americas was the fourth-largest region, accounting for 7%, and the remaining 10% went to the rest of the world. The UK was one of the leading markets within the “rest of the world” category.

The challenge of feeding the world is immense, given the unrelenting effects of climate change, from droughts and floods, both of which have increased in frequency and intensity in Africa. To secure global food supplies by 2050 when the world’s population will reach 9.6 billion, Africa must become part of the solution. READ MORE
When structuring growth-enhancing reforms, there is value in crafting a unifying overarching vision where each role-player has a sense of ownership, responsibility, and clarity about the possibilities of success. When such a vision is implemented, each party should continuously communicate success and glitches along the way. READ MORE

Breeding using sexed semen can help your bottom line by creating cattle the market demands, says Dr Ken Odde, professor and department head emeritus of the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry at Kansas State University.
Long-Term Off Take Agreements for Carbon Credits are the Future -In today's world, where the clarion call for sustainable solutions echoes louder than ever, companies have a golden opportunity to lead the charge in climate action. The answer lies in investing in long-term off take agreements for carbon credits, particularly those based on the innovative Hemp Carbon Standard.
As droughts and floods wreak havoc on harvests, small-scale farmers are spending billions of dollars of their own money each year to adapt to a changing climate, despite it being a problem they did not create, according to research released on Tuesday.
The solid production conditions in South Africa’s agricultural sector continue to be reflected in the employment data. The Quarterly Labour Force Survey data released last week by Statistics South Africa showed that in the third quarter of 2023, about 956 000 people were employed in primary agriculture, up 10% year-on-year (and 7% quarter-on-quarter).
South Africa's burgeoning blueberry industry is encountering significant challenges due to weather disruptions, port delays, and power outages, while neighboring countries like Zimbabwe are rapidly expanding their blueberry production.
