Through local crop initiatives across Africa, in countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana, the brewing industry is expanding opportunities for farmers and enhancing agricultural value chains. By integrating traditional (sorghum and cassava) and high-value complex crops (barley and maize), these initiatives not only foster economic resilience but also promote food security and sustainable cultivation practices. As Africa embraces the promise of AfCFTA, the beer industry emerges as a linchpin for unlocking its full potential. By fostering collaboration between public and private sectors, the industry advocates for improved infrastructure, streamlined trade processes, and support for smallholder farmers. Through enhanced intra-African trade, the beer industry catalyses job creation, fosters innovation and uplifts communities across the continent.
The rough moss frog, exclusively found in the Klein Swartberg Mountain near Caledon, Western Cape, is among South Africa's critically endangered species. This unique frog species is significantly impacted by rising temperatures and the infestation of non-native pine trees that dry up the soil moisture from fynbos where the frog breeds - a problem expected to worsen due to climate change. Dr Jeanne Tarrant, an amphibian conservation biologist and director of Anura Africa – a newly established organisation committed to advancing amphibian conservation in southern Africa – said a decline in frogs could negatively impact ecosystems and human health. "Studies linking reduced frog populations to increased malaria cases demonstrate the significant role that frogs play in ecosystems," said Tarrant.

Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.
Grain SA's 56th NAMPO Harvest Day, which was presented from 14-17 May 2024 on NAMPO Park just outside Bothaville, is considered a great success by all accounts. A record number of 86,474 visitors over the four days - as well as 865 exhibitors - confirms the trade fair's popularity among farmers, exhibitors, opinion makers and everyone in society who has a heart for agriculture. Mosquito vector populations sufficient to maintain malaria transmission occur within a particular range of temperatures and humidity that are suitable for their survival and breeding. The parasite also needs suitable temperatures to complete its mosquito life stages. And mosquitoes need surface water to breed in. These conditions have to last long enough for mosquito and parasite populations to grow. READ MORE
With just over a week left before South African heads into the 2024 general elections, discussions in various agricultural gatherings are understandably centered on the theme of elections and possible outcomes. However, the policy direction and commitment to implementation will be far more critical for agriculture. A rough scan of various political parties' manifestos shows that agricultural matters are well-featured, with varying views on land reform. Also evident this time is an appreciation of what the sector could continue to contribute to the rural economy, job creation and the national food security. READ MORE
The insect glue, produced from edible oils, was inspired by plants such as sundews that use the strategy to capture their prey. A key advantage of physical pesticides over toxic pesticides is that pests are highly unlikely to evolve resistance, as this would require them to develop much larger and stronger bodies, while bigger beneficial insects, like bees, are not trapped by the drops.
Once considered a fringe concept, electric trucks have become a tangible solution to reducing carbon emissions and operating costs in the transport sector, says Joubert Roux, co-founder of renewable energy company, Zero Carbon Charge.
Grain theft is a regular and growing problem within the agri value chain, and the commodity is most vulnerable to theft during transport. Wimpie Nel, a specialist grain theft investigator and former police captain investigating commercial crimes, told Agbiz Grain Quarterly that the various levels of grain fraud and theft most commonly occurred in the transport link between the producer and the buyer of grain.
The South African Agriculture Machinery Association (SAAMA) has reported another drop in sales, expected due to the weak economy and tough conditions. Falling sales are a sign of market correction following an impressive upswing in the three years before 2023, driven by good harvests and high commodity prices.
South African farmers and workers in the maize-growing regions are getting ready for a busy period. The harvest season has just started and should gain momentum in the coming weeks, lasting until July for some areas.
Cannabis is finally on the radar of South Africa’s grain farming industry, but not to feed the recreational or medical marijuana markets. Budding potential for grain farmers could come in the form of cannabis oil, but it’s early days yet and the policy framework remains shrouded in a purple haze.
When Europeans arrived in North America, up to 60 million bison roamed the great plains. These iconic grazers turned the prairie soils into a deep carbon sponge, vibrant with biological activity. Often overlooked in this story is the vast diversity of plants carpeting the plains.
