The excessive heat across SA in recent weeks is a significant concern for the farming sector. The 2023/24 summer crop season started on a favourable footing. We received widespread rains, which was unusual in an El Niño season, which would typically start with drier weather conditions. According to data from the Crop Estimates Committee, SA farmers managed to plant a sizeable summer grain and oilseed area of 4.4-million hectares, up 0,4% from the 2022/23 season. For a while it appeared as though SA was on track for yet another excellent harvest. But since the start of February the rain has been scant across the summer crop-growing regions, raising concern about the yield potential of the crops. Perhaps we should not have been completely surprised by the current difficulty.
Those good early-season rains led us to believe the country would have a decent harvest in the 2023/24 production season. But this view has now changed. We worry about possible poor harvests if there is no widespread rain during these closing days of February into the first week of March. Indeed, the Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) also fears the possible decline in the summer grains and oilseed harvest. Its first production estimate for the 2023/24 season placed the summer grains and oilseed harvest at 17,4 million tonnes, down 13% y/y. This is a function of a reduction in planted area and the expected lower yields in some regions.
Outstanding articles of the week.
"There is little that I could add to the brilliant outlook that my colleague Elmarie Rabe, chairperson of the South African Wine Routes Forum (SAWRF) and head of Stellenbosch Wine Routes, shared on wine tourism and wine trends in 2024," says Marisah Nieuwoudt, wine tourism manager at South Africa Wine. The 2023 Financing Flows and Food Crises report, developed by the Global Network Against Food Crises, underscores the significant external financing that countries and territories facing food crises have received. Over the past seven years, these areas have received three-quarters of global humanitarian allocations and almost one-third of global development allocations. READ MORE
The main factor supporting this surge is robust U.S. import demand, fuelled by declining domestic beef production. In the sheep meat market, a decrease in the number of sheep available for slaughter (because farmers kept animals for longer due to recent rains) and high demand for imports globally caused sheep meat prices to rise (2.0%) internationally. The National Council for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals (NSPCA) has called for a complete ban of livestock exports via sea following the discovery of the abhorrent condition in which animals were kept on the Al Kuwait, which docked in Cape Town last week to load feed on its way from Brazil to Iraq.

Looking into average prices, the price for both fruits and vegetables has increased year-on-year from R9.50/kg to R10.16/kg (7.5%) and R6.60/kg to R6.65/kg (1.2%), respectively.
