Annual consumer price inflation rose to 5.3% in January from 5.1% in December last year, the first jump after two-consecutive months of moderation. This is marginally higher that the 5.2% rise expected by 18 economists . The categories in the CPI basket with the largest annual price increases were restaurants & hotels at 8%, food & non-alcoholic beverages (NAB) at 7.2%, and health at 6.5%. Annual inflation for food and NAB slowed to 7.2% in January from 8.5% in December and 9% in November, Stats SA said. All sub-categories recorded lower annual rates, apart from sugar, sweets & desserts, oils & fats, and cold beverages. Annual inflation for bread & cereal products declined from 7.5% in December to 6.5% in January. Meat inflation was also softer, cooling from 3.9% to 2.2%. A monthly decline of 5.2% in fuel prices between December and January was not enough to subdue the annual rate for fuel, which jumped from a decline of 2.5% in December to 3.3% in January. This contributed to a sharp rise in annual transport inflation to 4.6% from 2.6% in December. The consumer price index increased by 0.1% in January 2024, Statistics SA reported.
The unemployment rate, according to the expanded definition, decreased by 0.1 of a percentage point to 41.1% in the fourth quarter. Stats SA’s quarterly labour force survey shows the youth, aged 15 and 34 years, remain vulnerable in the labour market, with fourth-quarter results showing that the total number of unemployed youth increased by 87,000 to 4.7-million. The industries that contributed to the net employment decline include the community and social services sector, which lost 171,000 jobs. Construction was also down by 36,000 jobs. Agriculture fell by 35,000 jobs, while trade and manufacturing fell by 28,000 and 1,000, respectively.
After a notable jump in the third quarter of 2023 to 956,000, South Africa's primary agricultural employment fell by 4% quarter-on-quarter to 920,000 in the last quarter of 2023. Jobs declined mainly in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.Still, when we view the agricultural jobs annually, these provinces employ many people. The last quarter of 2023 was still well above 2022 levels, except for Mpumalanga, where we saw a marginal decline in primary agricultural jobs. Notably, the 920,000 jobs in primary agriculture in the last quarter of 2023 is 7% up year-on-year and well above the long-term agricultural employment of 793,000.
The macadamia nut industry is entering a recovery phase as low prices stimulate demand and value-adding. Over the last two years, the crop fetched significantly lower prices as world economies took a downturn after the COVID-19 lockdowns. The increase in the global crop as a result of new plantings coincided with the lower demand, pushing prices further down. In 2023, farmers achieved on average US$8,25/kg (R152/kg at an average exchange rate) for kernel for the season. This was even lower than the average price of US$11,50 (R188/ kg at the 2022 exchange rate) in 2022, and US$16/kg (R236/kg at 2021’s average exchange rate) in 2021. This year, marketers expected a slight increase from the 2023 prices.

Sexes also face different environmental pressures. For instance, in many mammals, males, but not females, disperse away from the family group when they mature. This sort of environmental pressure leads to differences in the strategies males and females use to pass on their genes, which can create differences in rates of reproductive ageing between the sexes. Biodiversity can also refer to the variety of ecosystems—communities of living things and their environments. Ecosystems include deserts, grasslands, and rainforests. The continent of Africa is home to tropical rainforests, alpine mountains, and dry deserts. It enjoys a high level of biodiversity. Antarctica, covered almost entirely by an ice sheet, has low biodiversity. READ MORE

Illegal entry and trespassing on private properties have become one of the most general crimes hampering proper agricultural production on small and medium scale farms in South Africa.
