Pangolins have historically served as bushmeat in some African countries, with limited use of their scales for traditional cultural practices.  Professor Ray Jansen from South Africa’s Tshwane University of Technology and the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission Pangolin Specialist Group.says the cultural use of pangolins in South Africa is considered sustainable. The existential threat stems from the illegal trade that supplies Asian demand for pangolin scales used in traditional Chinese medicine. South Africa already serves as an exit point for large shipments of wildlife commodities such as ivory and abalone. But – as is typical of organised crime investigations – Jansen notes the difficulty in infiltrating the criminal networks responsible for large export operations.

Destructive wildfires continue to threaten lives, property and the environment throughout the world. Around 10% of all fires globally occur on agricultural land, causing damage to crops, infrastructure and nearby native vegetation. Globally, 38% of the land surface is used for cropping or grazing. Agricultural produce is a key commodity of many countries. Agricultural fields are a major source of wildfire, either through the escape of fires lit deliberately for agricultural purposes (stubble burning) or through accidents (ignited from machinery use). There is a clear need to better mitigate fires in agricultural landscapes. Agricultural landscapes are also very important for native biodiversity. Diversification of agricultural systems could not only help mitigate wildfires, but also aid food production and promote biodiversity conservation.

The average income in South Africa is R77 192 per annum, compared to R73 409 in Vietnam,  but the median income in Vietnam is R59 563 per annum, compared to R30 718 in South Africa. Why is Vietnam’s average wage lower than South Africa’s yet its median wage is almost double? Because to calculate the median, you line everyone up from poorest to wealthiest and when you get to the person in the middle, you take their wage. In South Africa you need to count an awful lot of unemployed and very poor people before you get to the middle. Our levels of poverty and inequality are much higher than “sweatshop’ Vietnam. Our unemployment rate is 33%, whereas Vietnam’s is 2.3%. Almost no one lives on our R350 per month in Vietnam. Bangladesh has a median wage of R51 646 per annum and an average wage of R55 404 per annum (low levels of inequality). Their wages are rising by an average of 8% per annum, with unemployment down to 4%. In 20 years, who do you think will be better off? South Africa, Vietnam or Bangladesh?

Almost half of the grains grown around the world are harvested for people to eat directly. A food staple is food that is eaten frequently, often at every meal. Staple foods can be eaten fresh or stored for use all year. Rice, corn, and wheat are the most common staple foods on Earth. The first and most obvious use for fossil fuels such as oil is to make gasoline and diesel for our vehicles. Without those, our civilization would completely collapse because truckers need diesel to get food and supplies to the stores. Not to mention the fact that most people in the developed world need gasoline to get to their jobs.  READ MORE

Virtual power plants aren’t new. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that there are already 30 to 60 gigawatts of them in operation today. A gigawatt is 1 billion watts – roughly the output of 2.5 million solar photovoltaic panels or one large nuclear reactor.  READ MORE

Oils extracted from the palms of Indonesia are used in everything from candy bars to soap, lipstick and fuel, and stable supplies of the most used edible oil are essential for keeping global food inflation under control.
