Any fruit or vegetable is, under the wrong conditions, subject to rot, often in the form of an infection from Botrytis cinerea. The fungus is found from the tundra to the tropics, thriving in areas with ample humidity – at least 80 percent – and temperatures between 12 and 25 degrees Celsius. Most farmers view it as a pathogen, but winegrowers, in the right conditions, see it as pure gold. Sauternes, Tokaji, and other botrytis-affected wines are among the world’s most treasured libations, and science is just beginning to understand how botrytis creates these luscious wines, which have earned the fungi the nickname “noble rot.

According to a statement from the food and agriculture body, the Istituto di Servizi per il Mercato Agricolo Alimentary (ISMEA), Italian wine production is dropping to “just below” 44 million hectolitres, which is down 12% compared to 50 million last year.

From the US to Brazil and Indonesia, governments are embracing energy made from plants like soybeans or canola, or even animal fat, to move away from fossil fuels and cut emissions. This has created opportunities for vegetable oils, especially palm oil, an ubiquitous but controversial ingredient found in products like pizza dough, instant noodles, chocolate and shampoo.

The macadamia tree, Macadamia integrifolia, is considered an ‘ecological giant’ in commercial agriculture in the horticultural sector. This may be ascribed to its efficiency to optimise water consumption, sequester carbon from the atmosphere, absorb phosphates and recycle organic waste material.

The global onion market is currently in a tumultuous situation in many markets, for the most part due to the unpredictable weather in production countries. In the Netherlands, despite high prices, concerns linger about the quality of Dutch sowing onions and unpaid invoices from the previous season.

Less than a week away from the kickoff of the first ever FAO Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation, which will be held in Rome, Italy, from September 25 to 27, IDF has just launched a special edition of its Dairy Sustainability Outlook (DSO).

Nestle SA has begun pilot testing in the United Kingdom for a new sustainable agriculture solution that uses cocoa shells to create a low-carbon fertilizer. The trial program will examine how the cocoa-based fertilizer affects wheat crop production, soil health and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over a two-year period.

In 'n News24-berig wys prof.
