In March the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation's Global Food Price Index, a measure of the monthly change in international prices of a basket of agricultural commodities, was at 126.9 points, down 2.1% from February. This marked the twelfth consecutive monthly decline since it reached a peak a year ago. Notably, the index is down 21% from March 2022, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. This decline has been observed in commodity prices across the board, including meat, dairy, cereals and vegetable oils.  The exception is sugar prices, which are up marginally from March 2022. The 2022/23 global sugar ending stocks are projected to tighten as growth in global consumption exceeds the rise in production.

If food producers and retailers were empowered to lower the prices of 10 staple foods (preferably including maize meal and eggs) it would benefit consumers and the economy. By working together, a simple 20% decrease across a number of new food categories would help make certain staples more accessible to citizens in lower-income households. If the SA government can motivate or constructively work with food producers and retailers towards this goal, consumers (especially those from lower-income households) could experience relief sooner rather than later.

US Urea barge sales saw a lot of activity this week as US domestic sales sprang to life after Easter. This encouraged traders active in North America to start buying cargos to refill their positions. This buying activity supported prices in a number of urea-producing regions. The Middle East urea price rebounded to $300/t fob after hitting 2 year lows last week. The Brazilian price also rose $15/t in sympathy on this development. READ MORE

“The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently in a La Niña state, and forecasts indicate that it will likely return to a neutral state by autumn (Mar-Apr-May). However, ENSO’s impact is limited for the coming seasons until the next summer season which may be impacted by an El Niño state if early predictions are correct. Caution is advised, however, as changes in the ENSO prediction may change during winter and only monitoring is advised at this stage,” the weather service said.  READ MORE

The conclusion that agriculture is one of the main sources of greenhouse gases is based on a paradigm that can be questioned. The fundamental process in agriculture is large-scale photosynthesis, in which carbon dioxide is captured by crops and at the same time oxygen is produced.

Carnivores like leopards, lions and hyenas have been killing livestock for centuries, causing financial losses to farmers. In many parts of the world, farmers respond by killing these predators. This has greatly reduced the populations of some top predators like leopards and lions.

“The multimodel rainfall forecast indicates above-normal rainfall for the northeast of the country and below-normal rainfall for the southwest during all predicted seasons.
