With heat waves hitting much of Europe, and temperatures rising elsewhere on the northern hemisphere, melons and watermelons are enjoying a significant boost in popularity. There is one issue however: a poor season for the fruit last year has led to large decreases in production area in major melon growing country, Spain. Not only this, but the extreme hot weather in Spain and other growing regions has meant the crop peaked earlier than usual, leading to what will likely be an early end to the season. These factors have driven prices sky-high, which will hopefully compensate growers for any losses. Meanwhile in South Africa, growers of winter watermelon see increasing demand for their product too, providing them with increased opportunities for sales. And finally, various adverse growing conditions leading to decreased volumes on the North American market have inflated prices for melon and watermelon on this market considerably too.

The CSIR and the Agricultural Research Council worked with emerging farmers to collect data from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during the 2019/20 and 2020/21 growing seasons to demonstrate the usefulness of such data and refine the precision farming methods. The solutions under development are needed by emerging farmers whose productivity is affected by changes in the environment, requiring them to take decisions on challenges such as crop health and growth, plant density and crop damage.

What could SA, and the rest of Africa, possibly get from Russia? What we do know is that measures by Ukraine’s allies to coerce countries like SA to side with them could end up having the opposite effect. What could SA, and the rest of Africa, possibly get from Russia? What we do know is that measures by Ukraine’s allies to coerce countries like SA to side with them could end up having the opposite effect. When the resolution condemning Russia’s “aggression in Ukraine” was passed days after that country’s illegal invasion of its neighbour, SA objected. Even though they agreed Russia’s actions were illegal, the feeling was that the words of the resolution “could drive a deeper wedge between the parties rather than contributing to a resolution to the conflict”, SA’s representative to the UN, Mathu Joyini, said at the time.

AGCO is investing heavily in South Africa to establish itself as the preferred supplier for mechanization and technology. Dr. Dominik Reus, Managing Director, AGCO, Africa: “Working very closely with farmers to provide suitable hi-tech, solutions for mechanization is a driving purpose of AGCO. We want to see South African farmers succeed in the global market.

Welkom by die Suid-Afrikaanse regering.

Successive years of stringent water restrictions on farmers’ drawings from the Kouga Dam are taking their toll in the citrus-rich Gamtoos River Valley, with several commercial farmers having relocated or closed shop over the past 12 months. Last month, the Department of Water and Sanitation announced that the 128 citrus, cash crop and dairy farmers in the valley, relying on the Kouga Dam, would be permitted to draw just 20% of their usual water allocations from the dam for 2022/23. The dam is currently at 16.6% capacity.

World Animal Protection commissioned research into public attitudes towards trophy hunting, surveying 10,900 people from around the world, including international tourists from countries who most frequently visit South Africa, and South African citizens. It revealed universally strong opposition to the blood sport and a desire to finance the protection of the nation’s iconic wildlife through non-lethal alternatives such as responsible wildlife tourism.

The key findings from the research* revealed:

  • 84% of international tourists agree that the South African government should prioritise wildlife-friendly tourism over trophy hunting
  • 74% of international tourists agreed that making trophy hunting a key pillar of policy will damage South Africa’s reputation, and 72% would be put off from visiting the country altogether
  • 7 in 10 South African citizens agree their country would be a more attractive tourist destination if they banned trophy hunting
  • Three quarters (74%) of South African citizens agree that trophy hunting is unacceptable when wildlife-friendly tourism alternatives have not been fully utilised.

It’s a buzzworthy phrase that represents our global community’s growing desire to reduce our emissions, reverse climate change, and invest in the future of the Earth. And as a demographic that’s intimately invested in the relationship between the population and the planet, farmers are in a unique position to pursue the carbon-neutral goal.

The government uses language like job creation and radical economic transformation without ever concluding how they will create jobs, or what a radically transformed economy would look like, either strategically or in execution. And that is sadly what all of the ANC's responses to the media or the citizens of the country resolve into -
