South Africa’s food inflation slowed to 4.4% y/y in September 2025, down for the second consecutive month, driven by declines in vegetables, fruits, nuts, oils, fats, milk, dairy, and eggs, with a -0.4% m/m deflation (from -0.1% m/m in August). However, meat inflation hit a 7.5-year high of 11.7% y/y (+0.5% m/m), fueled by foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) disruptions reducing cattle and sheep slaughter by 9% and 13% respectively for June-August 2025 (626,587 cattle, 1.05 million sheep), down 10% and 9.9% y/y. Pig slaughter remained stable (+1% at 661,468 head), while chicken production dipped 0.7% to 21.15 million weekly, with imports plummeting 54% to 46,081 tons.

The sector can address poverty (affecting 400 million), hunger (290 million malnourished, including 45 million children), gender inequality (40% of global agricultural workforce are women), and climate migration (40% of global climate migrants by 2050). Public spending is only 3% of African budgets (versus the AU’s 10% target), with private investment at 3% compared to 10% globally.

Malaysia (1.4%) and Vietnam (0.6%) also offer untapped potential, but cracking these markets demands slashing tariffs and easing phytosanitary hurdles. The reliance on early-2000s trade deals has left us lagging, and Minister Steenhuisen’s call for sharper negotiation skills is spot-on—our current capacity feels like a tractor stuck in low gear. With half our produce exported and harvests expanding, free trade agreements are non-negotiable to sustain growth, though we must shield local industries from risks. Domestic reforms—better municipalities, less crime, and investment incentives—are equally critical to keep farmers competitive.This isn’t just diplomacy; it’s a wake-up call. South Africa’s agricultural future hinges on bold, swift moves to seize global opportunities while strengthening the home front. Let’s not let this chance slip through the cracks.

Middle East prices hit the $400s (+$6/t), Egypt $440/t, though Brazil dipped $5-10/t due to ammonium sulphate imports. Iran’s discounted $365-370/t urea may shrink post-November due to gas demands. Ammonium sulphate softened, ammonium nitrate saw low demand, and ammonia surged to $600-650/t globally.Phosphates: Markets weakened, with Indian DAP below $750/t and Brazilian MAP at $660/t CFR (down $100 in 5-6 weeks) due to low demand. China’s export halt (post-October 15) won’t tighten supply significantly. Isolated Morocco/Saudi sales were outliers.Potash: Stable at $355-380/t, with Durban at $368/t. Brazil’s $350-360/t may soften as growers cut P/K use. China’s contract renewal in December will be key.Market Context: Brent crude steady at $66/bbl, European gas at $11/MMBtu, US gas at $3.2/MMBtu.
