South Africa’s food inflation slowed to 4.4% y/y in September 2025, down for the second consecutive month, driven by declines in vegetables, fruits, nuts, oils, fats, milk, dairy, and eggs, with a -0.4% m/m deflation (from -0.1% m/m in August). However, meat inflation hit a 7.5-year high of 11.7% y/y (+0.5% m/m), fueled by foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) disruptions reducing cattle and sheep slaughter by 9% and 13% respectively for June-August 2025 (626,587 cattle, 1.05 million sheep), down 10% and 9.9% y/y. Pig slaughter remained stable (+1% at 661,468 head), while chicken production dipped 0.7% to 21.15 million weekly, with imports plummeting 54% to 46,081 tons.
A new report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the Paris Peace Forum highlights African agriculture’s potential to advance 50% of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals but notes severe underfunding, with only $49 billion invested in 2022 against a needed $200 billion. Agriculture sustains 70% of Africans (mostly women) and contributes 30% to GDP, yet farmers receive just $140 annually compared to a global $1,300, leading to $27 billion in cereal imports, projected to hit $110 billion by 2030 without action. The sector can address poverty (affecting 400 million), hunger (290 million malnourished, including 45 million children), gender inequality (40% of global agricultural workforce are women), and climate migration (40% of global climate migrants by 2050). Public spending is only 3% of African budgets (versus the AU’s 10% target), with private investment at 3% compared to 10% globally.

The global legal cannabis market is today worth about US$69.78 billion, and this will skyrocket to US$216.76 billion by 2033. But is this boom benefiting indigenous cannabis farmers in southern Africa? They’d been growing the plant for hundreds of years before colonial authorities criminalised it in the early 1900s. Rural people continued to grow it illicitly after that, relying on its medicinal properties. READ MORE
