For the 2025/2026 season, global cotton production is projected at 25.43 million tonnes, slightly exceeding consumption of 25.39 million tonnes. The yield is estimated at 836.28 kg of lint per hectare across 30.42 million hectares. Global trade in cotton lint is expected to be 9.79 million tonnes, with 9.788 million tonnes exported and imported, indicating significant global movement. China, despite U.S. tariffs, remains a major consumer, with projected cotton consumption of 7.7–8.15 million metric tonnes in the 2024/25 marketing year (August 2024–July 2025), an increase from the previous year.

The Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, ruled that the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and Joburg Fresh Produce Market failed to meet their constitutional obligations to provide safe, hygienic, and functional municipal services. The market is in disrepair, posing risks to traders, consumers, and the public. The Institute of Market Agents of South Africa (Imasa) successfully obtained a court order directing the CoJ and Joburg Market to submit a precinct plan, including a risk assessment and recovery report, within 60 days (draft) and 120 days (final). The plan must address maintenance, upgrades, health and safety, quality, financial management, and implementation details.

Gariep Watch, a non-profit monitoring water quality in the Lower Orange and Vaal Rivers, has warned the Department of Water and Sanitation against legitimizing pollution through overly lenient standards. The department is setting water resource classes and Resource Quality Objectives (RQOs) to be legalized post-publication.

South Africa is entering the 2025-26 summer season under La Niña conditions, which typically bring above-average rainfall. The 2024-25 La Niña season saw heavy rains but resulted in strong harvests for fruits, vegetables, sugar cane, grains, and oilseeds, despite challenges like foot-and-mouth disease in cattle farming.
