FMD, a highly contagious virus affecting cloven-hoofed animals, has plagued South Africa since 2021, but 2025 has been a nightmare escalation. As of July 2025, there were 270 confirmed outbreaks across five provinces (KwaZulu-Natal hardest hit with 147 active cases, plus Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, and Eastern Cape). The virus spreads via infected animals, contaminated tools, or even water, but the root issue is lax biosecurity: uncontrolled animal movements at auctions, porous farm boundaries, and inadequate tracing. A single February 2025 auction in KZN Utrecht traced to dozens of cases highlights how one lapse cascades nationwide. Over the weeknd more reports came in.

As the 2025-26 summer crop season begins, focus remains on weather and soil moisture, critical for planting and crop development. Coming off a winter season, soil moisture is currently low but expected to improve with summer rains.  Gauteng and the Eastern Cape via KwaZulu-Natal revealed active planting in eastern regions, signaling an on-schedule start to the season despite earlier concerns. The season is marked by La Niña conditions, promising above-normal rainfall in the coming months, which is highly supportive of agricultural activity, particularly for summer crops.  Current low soil moisture reflects the winter season, not a cause for concern. Eastern regions are already seeing improved conditions, with favorable showers expected soon across the rest of the country. Farmers are actively tilling fields, preparing for a promising 2025-26 season, with expectations of enhanced soil moisture and robust crop production driven by the anticipated rainy summer.

This follows a solid 2024-25 season with above-normal rains that boosted maize production to 15.8 million tonnes (up 23% from the prior El Niño drought). Early rains have already improved soil moisture, encouraging planting optimism, but expect variability and flood risks.  Officially formed in September 2025, with a 71% chance of persisting through October–December and into early 2026 (59% through February–April, transitioning to neutral by March–May). It typically delivers above-normal rainfall to the northeastern and summer rainfall regions, aligning with most of the grain season's critical phases (planting in October–November, pollination in January–February).  Above-normal rainfall (25–50mm cumulative in October–November, extending through summer). Wet start expected, ideal for planting and early crop establishment. Average to above-average from December–March, but average to below-average in October–early November. Early soil moisture deficits may delay some western plantings, but La Niña should balance this later. Increased likelihood of wet conditions through mid-summer, with potential for extended rainy periods supporting yields. Generally normal to slightly above-normal across the grain belt, with warmer conditions in the west and southwest coast. No widespread heatwaves expected early on, but monitor for isolated hot spells that could stress crops. La Niña raises flood potential (e.g., heavy storms), which could disrupt harvests or cause erosion. Cyclone season (January–March) may intensify, overlapping with pollination—plan for drainage and insurance.  Overall, expect a wetter, more supportive season than 2024-25, with La Niña as a "lifeline" for rainfed grains (90% of production).
