FMD, a highly contagious virus affecting cloven-hoofed animals, has plagued South Africa since 2021, but 2025 has been a nightmare escalation. As of July 2025, there were 270 confirmed outbreaks across five provinces (KwaZulu-Natal hardest hit with 147 active cases, plus Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, and Eastern Cape). The virus spreads via infected animals, contaminated tools, or even water, but the root issue is lax biosecurity: uncontrolled animal movements at auctions, porous farm boundaries, and inadequate tracing. A single February 2025 auction in KZN Utrecht traced to dozens of cases highlights how one lapse cascades nationwide. Over the weeknd more reports came in.
As the 2025-26 summer crop season begins, focus remains on weather and soil moisture, critical for planting and crop development. Coming off a winter season, soil moisture is currently low but expected to improve with summer rains. Gauteng and the Eastern Cape via KwaZulu-Natal revealed active planting in eastern regions, signaling an on-schedule start to the season despite earlier concerns. The season is marked by La Niña conditions, promising above-normal rainfall in the coming months, which is highly supportive of agricultural activity, particularly for summer crops. Current low soil moisture reflects the winter season, not a cause for concern. Eastern regions are already seeing improved conditions, with favorable showers expected soon across the rest of the country. Farmers are actively tilling fields, preparing for a promising 2025-26 season, with expectations of enhanced soil moisture and robust crop production driven by the anticipated rainy summer.

Warm to HOT over the western interior. Thunderstorms will develop over Namibia from early on Friday, spreading over Botswana and later reaching the northern regions of the Northern Cape and parts of North West.

The South African avocado industry is intensifying efforts to combat avocado sunblotch viroid (ASBVd), a plant pathogen causing fruit blemishes, stem streaking, and leaf deformities. While rarely fatal, ASBVd significantly reduces marketable yields and profitability.
South Africa continues to be a net wheat importer. As of the start of the MY 2025/26 (3 October), the country had already imported 20,362 tonnes of wheat, with the main suppliers being Australia (52%), Lithuania (43%), and Poland (5%).
The title of Lamb Champs 2025 National Champion was awarded to Hennie Jonker, whose exceptional lamb impressed across every judging category, from on-the-hoof evaluation to final taste.
Our team is always on the roads- Observations from fieldwork in Gauteng, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and Eastern Cape show farmers actively tilling land for the 2025-26 summer crop season, focusing on yellow maize and soya beans, key for livestock. Unlike the delayed 2024-25 season, planting is on schedule, reducing risks of frost damage later.
A recent survey by the National Corn Growers Association shows that nearly half of U.S. farmers believe the country is on the brink of a farm crisis. Falling crop prices, high production costs, and uncertainty around trade policies are pushing many farms to the edge.

- Gedetailleerde Voorspelling:
- Vrydag (17/10): Matig tot warm, koel/koud oggende naby Lesotho-grens, geïsoleerde donderstorms in westelike/sentrale dele.
- Saterdag (18/10): Gedeeltelik bewolk, warm, verspreide donderstorms in Vrystaat, Noordwes, later Mpumalanga; sterk westewinde.
