Statistieke SA het einde November 2023 ’n opsommende ontleding bekend gemaak van alle boerderye wat in die tydperk van 1 Julie 2021 tot 30 Junie 2022 vir BTW geregistreer was. Die totale omset van die boerderye wat vir BTW geregistreer is, was R450 miljard. Die groot vraag is natuurlik hoeveel klein kommersiële boerderye nie vir BTW geregistreer is nie en onder die BTW-drempel val. Die meeste boerderye in die verslag se belastingjaar het einde Februarie geval. Die syfers wat my opgeval het, is dat die grootste 100 boerderye sowat 21,3% van landbouverkope lewer. In 2021 was dit sowat 23,7%. Kleiner boerderye se omset het dus vinniger toegeneem as dié van die groot boerderye.
Southern African citrus growers packed 165.1-million cartons for delivery to global markets during the 2023 export season – an increase of about 800 000 cartons year-on-year but 500 000 cartons lower than forecast at the start of the season.The Citrus Growers Association of Southern Africa (CGA) notes that exports for the season are also substantially below the anticipated growth curve based on plantings that can see the industry potentially hitting 200-million cartons in the next four years and possibly 260-million cartons by 2032.

Volgens die Afrobarometer het die persentasie van mense in Afrika wat demokrasie bo ander regeringsvorms verkies, van 75% in 2012 tot 66% gedaal. Demokrasie in Afrika het in 2023 nóg verder verswak en die vooruitsigte vir 2024 lyk nie beter nie. Daarom moet ernstige krisisse vanuit Afrika, wat ook die res van die wêreld kan en gaan raak, oor die volgende paar jaar verwag word.
More than 80% of farms in low-income countries are smallholder or backyard operations. This type of farm generates more greenhouse gas emissions per unit of meat, milk and eggs than commercial farms because of lower productivity. Farms in these countries are reservoirs of disease. This means the threat of a global outbreak – and the associated implications for greenhouse gas emissions – is never zero. These reservoirs occur because of a lack of disease surveillance, infrastructure, trained personnel and available medicines to detect, record and control livestock diseases.
