Weeklikse Afrikaanse Landbou Nuusoorsig - Die Afrikaanse Nuus is die afgelope paar dae op AGRI NEWS NET geplaas, saam met nog ander artikels.
A group of both US Democratic and Republican legislators have asked the White House to move this year's African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) summit away from South Africa, as they warn that the country looks set to lose its AGOA status. AGOA gives duty-free access to 25% of South African exports to the US, SA's second-biggest single-country trading partner after China. In a letter, dated June 9 and addressed to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Trade Representative Katherine Tai and National Security Advisor Jacob Sullivan, the group said: But the group also points out that South Africa held joint military exercises with Russia and China, and in April, authorised a Russian military cargo plane subject to US sanctions to land at a South African air force base.
The National Assembly has approved the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill, taking the ANC-led government one step closer to its plans for achieving universal health coverage. While the bill still needs to be considered by the National Council of Provinces, SA’s second house of parliament, is not expected to make material changes to the bill before submitting it to the president in the final round of assent. Critics have warned these measures would be at odds with the constitution because they would reduce members’ access to healthcare services. The bill has also been panned for what critics say are its weak governance provisions, which they say leave the NHI fund open to corruption. Health services will go down- and doctors will leave South Africa.
Christo van der Rheede, CEO of South Africa's largest agricultural federation, Agri SA, says the government's recently published draft rules introducing black shareholding requirements for new water use licences have less to do with transformation than with next year's elections, and will be “devastating” for local food production. “The agri sector has always been committed to transformation in the space of water rights, but you cannot just dish out rights to access water on a populist basis. They must be allocated to farmers who use the water rights effectively and efficiently for the purpose of food production.
South Africa’s request to extradite the fugitive brothers from the UAE was quietly turned down following the conclusion of a hearing in Dubai on 13 February. South African authorities were only notified of the court’s decision in early April when they received the note verbale. As FF Plus MP Wouter Wessels put it: “A court case in South Africa involving the Guptas would certainly have opened a can of worms of corruption, in which many high-ranking ANC officials would surely have been implicated.
Exactly how much water a given farm will need to extract is of course dependent on the crops its produces, the area of the country it is located, the quality of the soil and so on. But it is clear that the import of this will be to institute an absolute barrier to particular farmers – white farmers – operating at larger scales. READ MORE
“The (land reform) system has been captured by the elite,” wrote Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, SC, in Land Matters, South Africa’s failed land reform and the road ahead. “Women, who are meant to be the prime beneficiaries of land restitution, have been displaced from the queue by politicians and their cronies.” READ MORE

In the next 50 years, South Africa is going to see some dramatic changes during the dry season, a new climate change study says. Dry spells will be longer, the entire dry season will be longer, and it will get quite a bit hotter while the rains stay away.
Al die hoenderplase in die omgewing van die uitbreking is onder kwarantyn geplaas om die verspreiding van voëlgriep te voorkom. 120 000 hoenders is van kant gemaak.
Overall, the South African, and indeed Southern African agricultural sector, faces a slightly drier 2023/24 summer season. But this should not ring the alarm about the sector's prospects or scare investors and financiers away.
