South Africa already has a pipeline of 66GW of renewable energy projects under development, a new study has shown. The Renewable Energy Grid Survey launched on Tuesday included responses from 209 companies that are developing, or intend to build, renewable power plants in South Africa. The 66GW includes wind and solar power, as well as battery storage. The largest share is from wind power, with 21GW of wind and 7.5GW of wind combined with battery storage in the pipeline. Solar power plants and solar combined with battery storage accounted for about half of the 66GW.Many projects were expected to enter development only from 2026 to 2028, however about 23GW of projects could enter development within the next two years
Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said the slow procurement through middlemen of specific components reduces Eskom’s output by 2,800MW on average. Ramokgopa has previously said that Eskom has people issues. However, he has also denied that corruption is a problem at the utility. He has largely denied or downplayed the role corruption has played in the country’s energy crisis, ascribing many of the problems at power stations to “technical problems”. Ramokgopa clarified that the supply-demand imbalance is not the only problem at Eskom – “there are people issues there at Eskom”. However, these issues have nothing to do with the leadership of Eskom, according to Ramokgopa, but are due to a lack of job security.
In baie opsigte is Suid-Afrika ʼn baie klein, minderwaardige rolspeler binne Brics.
The numbers released by Statistics South Africa today show that in the first quarter of 2023, agriculture gross value added sharply contracted by -12,3% quarter-on-quarter (seasonally adjusted). There are a few elements that explain this sharp contraction. First, the field crops had a tough start to the season because of excessive rains, which disrupted and delayed plantings by over a month in some areas. READ MORE
The land is a constant, withstanding generational change in personnel, methodology, and even land use. However, industrial agriculture — characterized by the use of heavy tillage, intensive monocropping, and excessive grazing — has resulted in the degradation of the very soils that sustain our food supply. SA’s commercial farmers are angry about the water & sanitation department’s plans to introduce black shareholding requirements of up to 75% for water licences, saying this threatens farmers’ access to finance as well as the country’s food security. READ MORE
Petrol users across South Africa are paying around R1.50 a litre more for fuel in May 2023 than at the same time last year, despite decreases in the global oil price due to how petrol prices are determined in the country. This is according to the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA), which outlined how the fuel price is calculated in South Africa. Taxes and levies comprise 28% of fuel prices in South Africa, with only 53% to 55% being determined by fuel importing costs. Thus, fuel prices in South Africa are much higher than expected and even higher than what citizens in neighbouring countries pay for imported fuel from South Africa. The basic fuel price is the largest component at 53% to 55%, which, according to the AA, equates to roughly R12.63 per litre. This is the price determined by the cost of importing oil from international producers, including additional costs such as insurance, storage, and transport. The oil price and the USD/ZAR exchange rate heavily influence the basic fuel price. Wholesale and retail margins make up roughly 15% of the fuel price, costing R2.42 per litre. This is influenced by the costs of transporting fuel within South Africa, storing it, and pumping it. The two levies on fuel make up a significant 28% of the fuel price, meaning that government-imposed levies cost South Africans R6.14 per litre of petrol. 17% is due to the General Fuel Levy, which equates to R3.96 per litre. This levy goes directly to the National Treasury and can be used for any purpose the government considers fit. In 2023, the AA estimates the General Fuel Levy to generate R90 billion in revenue for the government. The RAF levy, on the other hand, costs motorists R2.18 per litre of petrol and is used to fund the RAF. This funding is expected to total R48 billion in 2023. Using the current data, filling a 50-litre tank of fuel inland (93ULP) will cost R1150.50 inland and R1130/l (95ULP) at the coast – R76.50 more now than a year ago. The infographic below shows how these components affect the inland petrol price in South Africa.

The final mohair sale of the 2023 summer season left us feeling somewhat disappointed. Throughout most of the sale, only the two processors actively participated as buyers in the saleroom. This created significant downward pressure on the market, particularly for adult mohair.
Every time there is a decrease in the price of fuel, the cost per kilometre per kilogram to transport goods reduces, says Gavin Kelly, chief executive officer of the Road Freight Association (RFA). Of course, it depends on the type of operation.
The biosecurity challenge continues as more cases of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) are reported across the globe. The HPAI virus is highly contagious among birds and the usual response from authorities is culling and quarantining of affected properties followed by import bans.
The government has defended its plans to introduce black shareholding requirements for new water use licences, saying it is doing so to correct the racial imbalance created by SA’s apartheid past.
The recent wave of farm attacks that have plagued the country in the past eight days can most likely be attributed to inflammatory remarks from organisations such as Cosatu, which believe that farmers are rapists and murderers, fueling animosity towards farmers.
Is the country’s food security under threat, with lower agricultural productivity due to load shedding and water restrictions and continuous population growth?
