Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen outlined a multi-faceted response to escalating rural crime in South Africa, particularly stock theft and farm attacks, following a parliamentary query by DA’s Willie Aucamp. While the South African Police Service (SAPS) holds primary responsibility, the Department of Agriculture supports crime prevention through: 1) Participation in the Inter-Ministerial Committee to implement the Rural Safety Strategy, focusing on hotspot identification and integrated safety plans; 2) Animal identification reforms, including Draft Regulations on Animal Identification (2025), decentralized systems, and biometric/DNA technologies to enhance traceability; 3) Farmer awareness campaigns with SAPS and municipalities to promote legal compliance and theft prevention; 4) Research into innovative identification methods like DNA testing; and 5) Legislative improvements to address issues like weak monitoring at auctions and porous borders, alongside better prosecution support.

Brazil, producing nearly 40% of global coffee, is a key exporter to the U.S., but new 50% U.S. tariffs effective August 1, 2025, will likely increase coffee prices for American consumers, exacerbating existing high prices due to unfavorable weather in Brazil and Vietnam (17% of global production). South Africa, a net coffee importer with an average of 23,921 tonnes annually over the past five years, sources 54% of its coffee from Brazil and Vietnam, with smaller shares from Uganda (8%), Tanzania (7%), Colombia (4%), Guatemala (4%), Ethiopia (3%), and Honduras (3%). The tariffs may create opportunities for Brazil to increase competitively priced, high-quality coffee exports to South Africa, potentially capturing market share from Vietnam and African suppliers, despite domestic tea and coffee producers’ concerns. South Africa’s demand for coffee, alongside other beverages like whisky (over $300 million in annual imports), supports potential for increased Brazilian imports as part of export diversification.

On trade, South Africa's efforts to renegotiate its trade relations with the U.S. have not yielded much success thus far. The expected 30% tariffs that South African products face in the U.S. will likely limit their competitiveness relative to other suppliers.

Econometric models estimate that U.S. tariffs, including a 30% reciprocal tariff on non-exempted goods, 25% on automotive products, and 50% on steel, aluminium, and copper, could reduce South African exports to the U.S. by $1.4 billion to $2.3 billion annually.

China Eliminates Tariffs on 98% of African Imports – A Turning Point for Trade -China has announced the elimination of import tariffs on 98% of products from 21 African countries. Johann Bornman, chairperson of Agri Development Solutions, released a report clarifying South Africa’s land reform progress, addressing widespread misinformation. Key findings include: Land reform statistics are often inaccurate due to flawed data collection, limited understanding of agriculture, or political manipulation.

Janse Rabie of Agri SA highlighted that while South Africa’s dam levels are higher than last year, localized droughts in the Northern Cape and up to 40% water restrictions in parts of the Eastern Cape underscore the country’s fragile water security.

South Africa’s macadamia industry, the world’s largest, faces a potential R460 million annual loss due to a 30% U.S. tariff on imports, effective August 1, 2025, as announced by President Donald Trump. The tariff, part of his “Liberation Day” package, follows a temporary 10% tariff costing R120 million yearly.

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) Trade Conditions Survey for May and June 2025 reveals a deterioration in trade conditions after a brief improvement in March and April. Global trade uncertainty, particularly due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s announced 30% tariff on South African imports effective August 1, 2025, has dampened prospects.
