South Africa’s citrus export season is at its peak in 2025, with projections of a record 171.1 million 15kg cartons exported, making it the country’s largest agricultural export industry. Efficient logistics, particularly improved rail usage, are critical to sustaining this growth. About 40% of export citrus comes from Limpopo, traveling 850 km to Durban’s port under strict cold chain protocols, with 90% currently transported by truck.  A notable development is the CTI Logistics-organized train from City Deep, Johannesburg, to Durban, carrying refrigerated containers (“reefers”) of citrus. This initiative, supported by Transnet, ensures temperature-controlled transport with 48 reefers per weekly train during peak season, with potential for expansion.

South Africa’s agriculture sector faces pressing challenges, including managing foot-and-mouth disease and navigating trade uncertainties, particularly with looming U.S. tariffs. Progress on animal disease control through vaccinations is underway, but reviving Onderstepoort Biological Products and involving private laboratories are critical to scaling up vaccine production to meet rising disease prevalence. On trade, the anticipated 30% U.S. tariffs from August 1, 2025, threaten South Africa’s competitiveness against countries like Chile and Peru, which may face lower tariffs.

South Africa faces severe economic challenges as a 30% U.S. tariff on exports, announced by President Donald Trump, is set to take effect on 1 August 2025, impacting key industries like agriculture, automotive, steel, and aluminium.

A recent opinion piece by international researchers argues that the European Union’s exclusion of new genomic techniques (NGTs), such as CRISPR-Cas9, from organic agriculture hinders the bloc’s goal of reaching 25% organic farmland by 2030 and closing the 20% yield gap in organic production.

On 21 July 2025, the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), in collaboration with the national Department of Agriculture, hosted an information-sharing session at Potchefstroom College of Agriculture to discuss the Blended Finance Scheme and Agro-Energy Fund.

Steenhuisen het gepraat by ‘n bek-en-klouseer indaba in Roodeplaat in Pretoria.

The 2025 International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) Congress highlighted that the global macadamia industry, while not in crisis, faces a critical juncture requiring strategic changes for South Africa, the world’s leading producer, to maintain its edge.

President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted progress in narrowing South Africa’s household income gap between racial groups, citing Statistics SA data showing a 46% real income increase for black African households and 29% for coloured households from 2006 to 2023. However, he noted white households still earn nearly five times more than black households
A global shortfall in macadamia yields is expected to cushion the impact of a 30% US import tariff on South African nuts set to begin on 1 August 2025. Poor weather conditions in key growing regions—South Africa and Australia—have drastically reduced crop forecasts.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) faced sharp criticism from the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) for its handling of small-scale fisheries, inadequate ocean patrols, and delays in issuing fishing permits, despite a R9 billion budget focused on climate resilience and job creation.

Rising fuel costs in agriculture significantly threaten farmers' profitability and food security by increasing production expenses, particularly for machinery and transportation. This erodes profits, especially for small-scale farmers, leading to reduced input use, lower yields, and decreased overall production. Consequently, food shortages may arise in regions dependent on local agriculture.

In South Africa’s Olifants River Valley, a vital citrus-producing region in the Western Cape, the 2025 winter season is overshadowed by concerns over a looming 30% U.S. tariff on South African imports, set to begin on 1 August 2025, after failed trade negotiations.

Africa’s next billion-dollar opportunity isn’t in fintech. It’s in food. Everyone talks about mobile money and apps. Few are talking about the fact that Africa: Imports $50 billion in food annually. Has 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land. Loses up to 40% of its harvest post-harvest due to poor storage and logistics.
