As the Southern Hemisphere corn production season draws to a close, the market focus shifted to production prospects for the 2024/25 Northern Hemisphere production season which commenced in April. Given the El Nino weather effects, the South American production season is expected to end better than initially anticipated as year-on-year corn production decreases observed in Brazil throughout the season were offset by increased production in Argentina compared to last season. For Southern Africa however, dry and hot conditions led to significant production cuts and some countries declaring states of national disaster. SAFEX maize prices remain firm, increasing by 36.2% and 7.0% year-on-year for white and yellow maize respectively.

South Africa is still home to over twice as many HNWIs as any other African country, with 37,400 millionaires, 102 centi-millionaires, and 5 billionaires, followed by Egypt with 15,600 millionaires, 52 centi-millionaires, and 7 billionaires. Nigeria sits in 3rd place with 8,200 HNWIs, followed by Kenya (7,200 millionaires),  Morocco (6,800), Mauritius (5,100), Algeria (2,800), Ghana (2,700), Ethiopia (2,700) and Namibia (2,300) all making it into the Top 10 wealthiest countries in Africa. Over the next decade (to 2033), the likes of Mauritius, Namibia, Morocco, Zambia , Kenya, Uganda  and Rwanda  are all expected to experience 80%+ millionaire growth. Mauritius is projected to enjoy a remarkable 95% growth rate, positioning it as one of the world's fastest-growing wealth markets. At the city level, Johannesburg holds its place as the wealthiest in Africa, with 12,300 millionaires, 25 centi-millionaires, and 2 billionaires. Cape Town follows closely with 7,400 millionaires, 28 centi-millionaires, and 1 billionaire. Cairo (7,200 millionaires), Nairobi (4,400), and Lagos (4,200) also stand out as key African urban wealth hubs. The latest so called millionaires in South Africa is tenderpreneurs- they stole a lot of money from the government- its called corruption and they drive the best cars- live in mansions and start buying food businesses for their family and friends and they like to travel to Dubai.

The SA spot price for white maize gained another 2% on Monday, bringing the increase so far this year to about 36%, sparking fears of the effect it will have on food prices and inflation. By market close the spot price of white maize on the SA exchange had risen R110 to R5,450 a tonne. The extreme heat and prolonged dryness in February and March destroyed maize fields and other crops in various regions of the country. At the end of March, the national crop estimates committee lowered its 2023/24 white maize production forecast to 6.9-million tonnes, a drop of 25% on the previous year. The problem is not unique to SA, with Zambia having lost about half of its maize crop. Zimbabwe, Malawi, and other Southern African countries face a similar challenge.

The narrative of land reform in South Africa is often marred by scepticism and claims of inefficacy. However, under the ANC’s leadership, significant strides have been made. Contrary to the notion of a stalled process, around 25% of the country’s farmland is now in the hands of black South Africans, a testament to the ANC’s effective policies and their impact on achieving a more balanced and fair land distribution.
