It seems incredible to think that, in the early 1990s, Transnet’s treasury division was so powerful that its decisions were said to have ramifications as far afield as the Bank of England. Today, Transnet — which runs South Africa’s rail and ports network — is a barely perceptible shadow of its former self. Astonishingly, it is vying with Eskom as the biggest risk to the South African economy. Jan Havenga, whose consulting group GAIN released a report on Transnet in September, put the projected loss to the country at R353bn this year. As Havenga put it, the country’s estimated GDP growth this year of 0.5% “could have been 10 times higher at 5.4%”. For added context, you might want to reread Transnet’s most recent accounts — the full document, not the sanitised media release. There, it’s not so much the R5.7bn in losses that strike you, or the theft of more than 1,000km of cable, or that volumes lost to “security incidents” were up 550% from 2018. Though its debt of R135bn is dwarfed by Eskom’s R423bn, Transnet’s implosion is estimated to be costing South Africa R1bn a day in economic activity.
Botswana said on Monday it would extend and expand restrictions on imports of some fresh produce as it tries to become self-sufficient in food and cut its import bill. The ban on imports of tomatoes, potatoes, onions and other produce — which angered farmers in SA and was due to expire at the end of December — would now run until the end of 2025, said the agriculture ministry. The number of restricted items would also double to 32 from July next year, the ministry said. The wait until July would act as a grace period to give Botswana’s farmers “some time to plant so that local produce can be ready”. The drought-prone country’s agricultural sector is relatively small, accounting for about 5% of economic output, with local farmers squeezed by cheaper imports from SA. SA supplied about 80% of the country’s food before a two-year ban was initially implemented from January 2022.

More than 130 countries signed a declaration on Dec. 1, committing to make their food systems – everything from production to consumption – a focal point in national strategies to address climate change. The declaration is thin on concrete actions to adapt to climate change and reduce emissions, but it draws attention to a crucial issue. READ MORE
South Africa's agricultural exports amounted to US$3.9 billion in the third quarter of this year, up by 4% y/y . This quarter, the products that dominated the export list were citrus, maize, apples and pears, nuts, wine, soybeans, sugar, and fruit juices. This solid export activity was both a function of improvement in volumes and prices, specifically of fruits. This more than offsets the effects of lower grains and oilseed prices, which have declined notably from their 2022 levels. READ MORE

Currently, 18% of the world's population lives in Africa. By 2100 it will be 38%. What will be the consequences of this? Will Africa be able to provide a home for everyone or will they simply occupy other continents, especially where there is a sharp decrease in population? One million people work in Agriculture in South Africa.
Cyber attackers continue to target the financial sector. What will happen when an attack takes down a bank or other critical platform, locking users out of their accounts?
Africa's OLD hydropower plants set for $1 billion upgrades to boost generation: The African Development Bank (AfDB) is drawing up plans for $1 billion of upgrades to a dozen hydropower plants in AFRICA, bank officials said on Monday, boosting capacity that is often unable to meet the continent's surging power needs.
On Monday, 4 December 2023, Judge Vahed today delivered his judgment on the Tongaat Hulett application to suspend the miller’s payment obligations arising out of the Sugar Industry Agreement.
The prevailing problems with local logistics is having a devastating effect on the vital automotive sector in South Africa which has experienced its fourth month of vehicle sales decline, according to the latest (naamsa) figures.
Following an encouraging recovery of 2,8% quarter-on-quarter (seasonally adjusted) in the second quarter of 2023, South Africa's agricultural gross value added contracted by 9,6% in the third quarter. These figures were a surprise as we thought the ample field crop, whose harvest was a month behind the typical schedule, would still be reflected in the third-quarter data.
Beef: The U.S. beef production remains under pressure, driving prices to historical highs. Prices remain under pressure in Asian markets and the Southern Hemisphere owing to high stocks and increased production. Locally, class A carcass prices continue to trade sideways while Class C prices increased by 1.6% month-on-month.
