Stats SA on Thursday showed producer price inflation fell to 4.8% in June, from 7.3% in May and 8.6% in April, reaching its lowest level since February 2021. The June reading is also below Reuters’ consensus of 6%. Stats SA data shows most major categories moderated further, amplified by the higher base established in 2022. The coke, petroleum, chemicals, rubber and plastic products category remained the main driver of the downward trend, followed by the food products category. Inflation in the coke, petroleum, chemicals, rubber, and plastic products category contracted 2.9% from an increase of 3.6% in May.

The global economy continues to gradually recover from the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but many challenges cloud the outlook.Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas says that economic activity in the first quarter of the year proved resilient, as energy and food prices fell sharply from their war-induced peaks, allowing global inflation pressures to ease faster than expected. Financial instability ollowing the March banking turmoil remains contained thanks to forceful action by the US and Swiss authorities, he adds.Under the IMF’s baseline forecast, growth will slow from last year’s 3.5 percent to 3 percent this year and next, a 0.2 percentage points upgrade for 2023 from our April projections. Global inflation is projected to decline from 8.7 percent last year to 6.8 percent this year, a 0.2 percentage point downward revision, and 5.2 percent in 2024.+

PSG Wealth’s chief investment officer, Adriaan Pask, said interest rate hikes are not the right mechanism for fighting inflation in all environments – particularly in South Africa, where economic growth is limited. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) recently decided to pause its hiking cycle for the first time since November 2021, when it started. Since the beginning of its hiking cycle, the SARB has implemented ten consecutive interest rate hikes and a cumulative 475 basis points of hikes. This has brought the country’s repo rate to a 14-year high of 8.25%. As the hiking cycle continued, experts questioned whether interest rates were the most effective method to manage South Africa’s inflation. It is a blunt tool with the potential to hamper economic growth significantly.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the trade turnover between Russia and African countries had increased by almost 35% in the first half of 2023 despite international sanctions and the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking at a trilateral meeting with the Chairperson of the African Union, President of the Union of Comoros Azali Assoumani, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, Putin said "despite the difficulties related to the coronavirus pandemic and the imposition of illegal sanctions against Russia, it was possible to ensure the growth in the pace of trade and economic ties" with African countries. Putin added last year, "the volume of mutual trade amounted to about 18 billion dollars."  "In the first half of this year, the trade turnover increased by almost 35%," Putin noted. "Russia continues to be a reliable supplier of food to Africa," he added, saying that in 2022, Russian exports of this group of goods had amounted to 4.7 billion dollars."

“The land reform programme has immense potential to stimulate rural economic development, contribute meaningfully to food security and create employment opportunities. Properly managed, this programme provides a pathway out of poverty for land reform beneficiary communities. Our experience has shown time and again that those CPAs that manage their affairs in a diligent manner have a better chance of attracting much-need commercial partners. So, good governance is not an option, but a prerequisite to a successful land reform programme. READ MORE

In sommige streke is mynbou baie winsgewender.

This is South Africa

South Africa playing Russian roulette – threatening the worst economic crisis in its HISTORY:

South Africa risks becoming bankrupt for its relationship with Russia, which adds virtually nothing to the economy, state revenues, economic growth, job creation, socioeconomic stability, and investor sentiment.

This is according to Investec chief Annabel Bishop, who commented on the dire consequences of entertaining relations with Russia – a country that has continued to push #war with Ukraine.

Concerns arose when the USA formally indicated that #SouthAfrica was in danger of being ousted from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), losing its trade benefits due to its love of Russia.

In a letter to the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the beginning of June, US legislators said that there are “serious concerns with current plans to host this year’s AGOA Forum in South Africa” and that “actions by South Africa call into question its eligibility for trade benefits under AGOA”.

This development came as US Intelligence suggested that South Africa’s government has deepened its military relationship with Russia over the past year, as accusations suggested a Russian cargo vessel subject to US sanctions docked in South Africa where the government covertly supplied Russia with arms and ammunition that could be used in its illegal war in Ukraine.

On top of this, South Africa held joint military exercises with Russia and  China, authorised a Russian military cargo plane (also subject to US sanctions) to land at a South African air force base, and continues the push to host the BRICS Summit, where the government aims to strengthen its ties with China and Russia.

This love for Russia might be justifiable if there were massive economic upsides to strengthening ties with the Russian Federation. However, it’s the exact opposite.

Russia accounts for a paltry 0.2% of South Africa’s global export trade, while the US, UK, and the EU account for a combined 35%, with China around 9%.

This means South Africa is risking over 40% of its export revenue. This would wipe out approximately 10 to 15% of its GDP – which stands at roughly R4.6 trillion, according to Stats SA.
