In September 2022, tydens pres. Joseph Biden na sy Suid-Afrikaanse eweknie as ’n vriend verwys en gesê: “The United States and South Africa and your government have the same value set.”

Global food inflation remains high due to Covid-19-induced bottlenecks and the effect of the war in Ukraine. SA is highly integrated with the global economy and domestic food inflation will trend in tandem with the global FAO Food Price Index. The current weakness of the rand-dollar exchange rate will further expose SA to imported inflation, which will probably prompt the Reserve Bank to continue reining in inflation, largely driven by food prices. Besides the Reserve Bank, the Competition Commission also expressed concern about persistent high food inflation and announced a pricing investigation on food items at retail and wholesale levels. As the economist Thomas Sowell remarked, “nothing is easier, or more emotionally satisfying, than blame.

India's announcement of severe curtailment of some rice exports triggered panic buying among the Indian diaspora in the United States, fearing a shortage of their food staple. The export ban on non-Basmati white rice varieties was imposed to ensure sufficient availability and control domestic market prices, following production woes caused by a brutal monsoon season and earlier than expected El Niño. The ban led to confusion and panic buying initially, with some Indian groceries experiencing shortages and long lines. The ban does not apply to Basmati rice, but economists warn it may hurt food supplies globally, prompting calls for reconsideration. In the US, imported rice from India is still available, but a long-term ban could deplete the stock, requiring adaptation and substitution for consumers.

In winning countries the economy determines politics, while in countries such as South Africa, politics determines the economy. A policy is not measured by its intentions; it is measured by its outcomes. The outcome of three decades of the ANC government proves their transformation policy to be a major failure. More of the same is just going to bring more of the same outcomes. That is why the EFF will have more success if they instead support the reasons for prosperity, such as healthy families, good schools and promoting the economic freedom of all to produce, regardless of their race or class.

Agriculture in Africa, as in a number of Asian economies, is the most important sector contributing an average of 20% to 24% of the total Gross Domestic Product of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In absolute terms, there are about 33 million smallholder farms of which an estimated 35,000 commercial farm units are in South Africa; 5,000 to 7,000 of these farms produce 80% of the agricultural output in South Africa.

Hierdie riviere is baie belangrik vir ʼn kontinent waar duisende mense in ekstreme armoede lewe en baie gebiede vreeslik droog is.
