Hannes de Waal, CEO of Sundays River Citrus Company, rejected claims of South African farmers fleeing to the US as refugees, stating, “South African farmers are going nowhere. We believe in the country and its people.” He acknowledged some farmers working abroad but highlighted barriers for young farmers, like rising land and water costs, and said it would take something extraordinary to shift South African agriculture elsewhere. Chamber CEO Denise van Huyssteen highlighted the metro’s precarious financial position, noting a R1.4-billion shortfall and 73% of electricity revenue coming from businesses amid supply constraints. She also emphasized the Chamber’s lobbying successes, such as reversing a fuel pricing rezoning that saved the local economy R50-million monthly in late 2024. She raised concerns about unstable leadership, with 19 city managers (mostly acting) since 2016, 15 since 2020, and pledged continued lobbying for a permanent appointment.

Land reform in South Africa, though urgent, has been undermined by corruption and mismanagement, particularly in institutions like the Land Bank. Once a key supporter of emerging farmers, the Land Bank was exploited by politically connected individuals under the ANC-led government, diverting billions meant for land redistribution and farmer support. This has fueled public anger over the slow pace of land reform, though the blame should target corrupt politicians and officials. Parliament allocates about R5 billion annually for land purchases and post-settlement support, but much of this is embezzled or wasted on poorly planned projects, with little accountability. The debate over expropriation without compensation (EWC) is concerning, as it risks political abuse and undermines fairness and justice.

  • Rol van Landbou-Organisasies: Kommersiële landbou is nie ’n “one-man show” nie; verkose leiers is verantwoordbaar.
