The second South Africa Wine Summit, held at the Conservatory in Stellenbosch, brought together industry leaders to discuss critical challenges and opportunities in the wine sector. Rico Basson, CEO of South Africa Wine, emphasized the need for climate resilience, technology adoption, consumer engagement, and sustainable practices to ensure global competitiveness. He highlighted the importance of the U.S. market, where South African wines fetch high prices, and stressed a "less is more" approach, focusing on quality over quantity in brand building, which takes decades. Daneel Rossouw from Nedbank underscored the industry’s economic impact, contributing R56 billion annually to GDP and supporting 270,000 jobs. He advocated for diversification into new markets and leveraging banks for technological and sustainable solutions. Nicky Weimar, Nedbank’s group head economist, noted challenges like weak infrastructure and global uncertainties but pointed to improving consumer spending and port operations, urging businesses to stay adaptable.
Eskom CEO Dan Marokane has welcomed the latest ratings report by Fitch Ratings that has affirmed and positively revised Eskom’s credit ratings. The state-owned utility is in the last year of a three-year debt relief programme in which the government has assisted it with a R254bn debt relief package. New borrowings were prohibited during this period that comes to an end at the end of this financial year on March 31 2026. Eskom has indicated that it will resume borrowing but vowed to keep its borrowings below the limit of R300bn, a level it hopes to reach in the financial year ending on 31 March 2030, down from R411 billion at the end of the current financial year.

Conflict and insecurity, weather extremes, and economic shocks continue to drive acute food insecurity. According to the 2025 Global Report on Food Crises, acute hunger has grown in 2024 for the sixth consecutive year. Around 295 million people are now facing high levels of acute food insecurity, with the most people experiencing the most severe forms of acute food insecurity (IPC/CH5) and famine living in countries affected by conflicts. The total harvest inspected is 78,9 million cartons, which is up 4% year on year, according to data from the South African Table Grape Industry. This is primarily boosted by favourable weather conditions and better farming practices, improving the overall yields. The area planted was around 19 488 hectares, still down from the 21 798 hectares we saw in the 2018-19 season. Plantings have generally declined due to various factors, including cost pressures in certain regions. READ MORE
Unlike murders in South Africa’s densely populated urban areas or informal settlements, farm murders are characterized by their premeditated, tactical nature and extreme violence. Urban murders often arise from immediate conflicts—arguments, domestic disputes, intoxication, or gang violence—while farm attacks involve coordinated planning and execution that suggest motives beyond simple robbery READ MORE

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

South African farmers are grappling with severe economic strain due to the persistent foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks across KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and the Eastern Cape. Strict government measures, including transport bans and lengthy veterinary assessments, have hindered livestock sales and slaughtering.
China is set to launch the world’s first vessel dedicated to salmon farming, the Su Hai No 1, in June, as part of its strategy to enhance domestic seafood production and reduce dependence on imports. The 250-metre ship, built at Guangzhou’s Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard for 600 million yuan (US$83.6 million), is designed to produce up to 8,000 tonnes of salmon annually.
Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest sea salt producer has inaugurated a new 14 000-square-metre warehouse at a cost of N$100 million. Speaking at the event earlier this week in Walvis Bay, Erongo region governor Neville Itope called Walvis Bay Salt’s new facility “a launchpad for growth.”

South African meat processors, represented by the SA Meat Processors Association (Sampa), are alarmed about a potential shortage of mechanically deboned meat (MDM) due to a ban on poultry imports from Brazil, triggered by an H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in Rio Grande do Sul.
High temperatures and insufficient rainfall are expected to reduce the grain harvest in Rostov, Russia’s largest grain-producing region, following spring frosts. Governor Yury Slyusar declared a farming emergency on May 19, enabling farmers to seek compensation. Rostov joins Voronezh and Belgorod as the third region to declare such an emergency due to adverse weather.
As South Africa’s energy system becomes increasingly digitised, the country’s electricity sector has become a high-value and vulnerable target for cyberattacks. Protecting South Africa’s grid against cyberattacks is now as important as physically securing power stations, and electricity smart meters in the country are particularly vulnerable.
