The government owns about 2.4 million hectares that are due to be released to appropriately selected beneficiaries for commercial production. This will be a major step towards eliminating the divide that has burdened South African agriculture historically. The commercial production of these hectares of land helps boost production and create much-needed job creation in rural South Africa. Overall, while expectations for 2025 are favourable, agriculture remains a cyclical game that is vulnerable to numerous external forces. With limited government support, South African producers – and the entire agricultural value chain – need stakeholders like banks to get involved. The agricultural sector remains invaluable to the South African economy. It helps to promote job creation and food security. That’s why investing in the sector is vital.

Over the past few centuries, the world’s economy has developed in a way that makes certain currencies more valuable and widely trusted for international trade. These include the US dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen and the British pound. These currencies hold value around the world because they come from countries with strong economies and a long history of trading globally. When people or countries trade using these currencies and end up collecting or holding them, they consider it “safe” because the value of these currencies remains stable and they can be easily used or exchanged anywhere in the world.  Brics+ countries are exploring how they can foster greater use of local currencies in their trade, instead of relying on a handful of major currencies, primarily the US dollar and the euro. The forum for cooperation among nine leading emerging economies – Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Russian Federation, South Africa, United Arab Emirates – emphasised this determination at their 16th summit in October 2024. The USD dollar is used all over the world- Given these challenges, The argue that Brics+ should progress incrementally. What can happen soon, though, is to conduct some trade in local currency.

ANN

The 2024 citrus season has ended – on a high, with just a slight dip in export numbers. That’s no mean feat for an industry that generates about R30bn in foreign revenue every season, but which has been severely hamstrung by persistent snarl-ups in South Africa’s ports. It’s an industry that has immense growth potential in the next couple of years, but only if the efficiency of our ports is urgently improved.   READ MORE

Brazil saw prices fall into the $320s this week as the large vessel lineup for November and late stage of the season put importers under pressure to chase sales.

Quantum, SA’s largest producer of eggs and a leading supplier of animal feed and poultry products, on Friday reported an 8.9% decline in revenue to R6.33bn for the year ended-September.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) urges the public to practice water conservation as water levels across Mpumalanga Province continue to decline. Notably, the Grootdraai Dam in Standerton has dropped below 70%.

While SADC countries are upbeat about upscaling food production, the region’s climate experts paint a gloomy picture of the impact of climate on agriculture. In September this year, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) issued its 2024/2025 Climate Outlook Report which seemed to confirm the worst fears of many smallholder farmers: the region will continue “....

Johann Rupert, chairperson and founder of Richemont, said the extension of a trade pact that gives South Africa and more than 30 other nations from the continent duty-free access to the world’s biggest economy is vital for his home country.

Koringproduksie speel ’n deurslaggewende rol in Suid-Afrika se voedselsekerheid as die land se naasbelangrikste voedselbron.

The South African Ports Regulator (SAPR) has granted an inflation-related 4.4% average tariff increase for the services rendered to port users by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) for the 2025/26 period.

Traditionally over Black Friday you would expect demand to pick and prices that will increase. This is unfortunately not the case in the fresh produce markets. Demand shifts more to tech products and soft drinks and if there is slightly better demand, consumers are looking for specials, so prices don’t usually react upward. I therefore don’t think is will support prices on the markets.

We believe the expected harvest and carryover stocks from last season will meet South Africa’s annual maize consumption of just under 12,00 million tonnes. This will still leave the country with a sizable volume for export markets. linThus, South Africa continues to export maize. The country exported 57k tonnes of maize on October 11, 2024. Of this volume, 47% was exported to Zimbabwe and the balance to the neighbouring African countries.

ANN
