The Presidency of COP29 has released a second text for the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, setting an annual target of $250bn for developing countries by 2035. “Factoring in inflation, that's a 30% increase on the 2009 target. Not world-changing, and hardly ambitious,” James Reeler, senior manager: Climate Action at the Worldwide Fund for Nature SA (WWF), told Business Day. “We will have to see what Parties say, but I don't think they'll be done today.” Ali Mohamed, chair of the African Group of Negotiators said: “The proposed target to mobilise $250bn per year by 2035 is totally unacceptable and inadequate to delivering the Paris Agreement. The Adaptation Gap Report alone says the adaptation needs are $400bn; $250bn will lead to unacceptable loss of life in Africa and around the world, and imperils the future of our world.
Deere & Co forecast lower-than-expected 2025 profit on Thursday, as sagging farm incomes and inflationary pressures affect demand for the company’s tractors and other agricultural equipment. A decline in farm incomes, high interest rates and an uncertain economy have compelled farmers to reassess large expenses on agricultural machinery and forced dealers to limit inventory restocking. US farm income is expected to fall for a second consecutive year in 2024, as farmers grapple with maize and soya bean prices hovering near four-year lows. The US department of agriculture estimates this year’s net farm income, a broad measure of profitability in the agricultural economy, to hit $140bn, down 4.4%, or $6.5bn, from a year earlier.

Geopolitical tensions and restrictive trade policies constitute a significant risk factor in global agriculture. There has been an escalation of trade tensions since 2018 when the US introduced import tariffs on Chinese products, and China retaliated with import tariffs on agricultural products. In the years after, trade disruptions intensified with Russia invading Ukraine.
South Africa's poultry industry is facing significant challenges, primarily due to its reliance on low-margin Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) products.
