Lymphatic drainage is essential for maintaining fluid balance, removing cellular waste, and supporting immune responses by allowing immune cells to encounter and respond to pathogens within lymph nodes. The system ultimately returns filtered lymph to the bloodstream.
Lymphatic vessels contain specialized endothelial cells called 'lymphatic endothelial cells' that express NOS3 or eNOS or Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase, which as the name implies, synthesizes Nitric Oxide. In lymphatic vessels, nitric oxide can contribute to dilation, influencing the diameter of lymphatic vessels and affecting lymph flow.
