Leading CEOs are to meet President Cyril Ramaphosa to update him on progress with their efforts to partner the government in tackling the country’s economic crisis. Organised business agreed with the government in early June to work together on energy, logistics and crime, the three priority areas business identified as critical to turning around the economy. They are establishing joint working groups which will report back to the president every six weeks. CEOs such as Discovery’s Adrian Gore, Anglo American’s Nolitha Fakude, Remgro’s Jannie Durand and Sanlam’s Paul Hanratty are among the 10 to 15 CEOs who will attend Tuesday’s meeting. Government ministers and directors-general, as well as Eskom and Transnet leaders, are expected to join. The meeting comes after the
CEOs of more than 115 companies pledged last week to use their collective resources and expertise to tackle the socioeconomic crises facing SA and reverse its downward trajectory. “We firmly believe in the immense potential of our country,” they said in the pledge, in which they committed themselves to “being a force for good”.
The formation of the EFF in 2013 brought the paradigm on the land question, which is central in securing dignity and pride for the landless people who have been rendered pariahs in their country of birth by successive colonial regimes. It is unacceptable that, 29 years after apartheid ended, whites in South Africa – who make up just 9% of the national population – own 72% of the farmland held by individuals. The possibility of reclaiming land, and changing agrarian relations on farms and patterns of ownership clearly cheered on black people who had suffered the indignity of landlessness in their ancestral territory. Expropriation of South Africa’s land without compensation for equal redistribution and use” remains the lodestar for the “attainment of economic freedom in our lifetime, and the canvas upon which the entire movement stands and all EFF policies on land revolve.
Most African grain consumers will have to continue relying on the open world market - where supplies are now tightening and prices are on the rise. Mr Putin is well aware of this diplomatic fallout. Could he be waiting for the summit to perhaps offer a supposedly magnanimously return to the grain deal, on slightly tweaked terms? That's not the only delicate issue on the agenda. READ MORE
Earth's climate is warming at a spectacular rate, and up to four times faster in colder regions such as the Arctic. Estimates suggest we can expect four sextillion (4,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) microorganisms to be released from ice melt each year. This is about the same as the estimated number of stars in the universe. READ MORE
This growth happened under the threat of avian flu, which was first identified in Brazil in May and has since advanced to 63 confirmed outbreaks. Of the 63 confirmed cases, 62 have occurred in wild birds and only 1 in subsistence animals (backyard). These cases should not result in commercial consequences in accordance with international agreements – only cases in commercial flocks should impact exports. However, Japan did suspend imports of poultry products from Espírito Santo. READ MORE
A global industry is developing to check that words lead to actions. They are on the lookout for exaggerated ambitions and especially “greenwashing”. For instance, Coca-Cola came under intense criticism for sponsoring last autumn’s COP 27 climate change conference in Egypt, as did the organisers for accepting the funding from the soft drinks giant that has been dubbed “the world’s top plastic polluter”, READ MORE

A lot has happened in the agricultural markets over the past few weeks. First, Russia decided not to renew the Black Sea Grain Deal, which is essential to facilitating exports out of Ukraine and has contributed to a decline in global grain prices.
The rise in pump prices for petrol and diesel, which took effect on Tuesday, adds to the pain of South African consumers. But inflation is generally abating and, if there is a silver lining, it is that rising fuel prices are a reflection of rising prospects for global economic growth, which is no bad thing for South Africa’s economy.
Climate change is altering weather patterns around the world. We’re witnessing an unprecedented rise in droughts in some areas and devastating floods in others. Since 2000, droughts have increased in occurrence by nearly 30%. It’s not only causing billions in economic damage but also dramatically impacting the lives of farmers.

Chinese-made tyres for passenger vehicles, trucks and buses will be subject to greater anti-dumping tariffs for the next five years. The tariffs will remain in place until July 2028 and mean that duties will rise between 7.18% to 43.6%. The current flat rate across all tyres imported from China was 38.33% in duties, a tariff rate that lasted until March
