The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) announced a 50 basis point interest rate hike at its latest Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, bringing the repo rate to 8.25%.This increase is the 10th consecutive hike South Africa has seen in the current hiking cycle, which started in November 2021. Despite the multiple interest rate hikes, the SARB has largely failed to bring the country’s high, sticky inflation down and within its target band.April inflation data provided some hope for a turnaround, as annual consumer price inflation hit 6.8% in April 2023 – the country’s lowest since May 2022.However, SARB governor Lesetja Kganyago said, “Headline inflation is forecast to remain above the upper end of the inflation target range until the third quarter of this year and will only sustainably revert to the mid-point of the target range by the second quarter of 2025.”

This month marks a year since the Agriculture & Agro-processing Master Plan was completed and launched. It offers the government and the private sector a framework to grow the sector, build competitiveness, attract more investment, improve inclusion and create jobs. This year should mark the start of the implementation phase. But progress remains limited, as the focus shifted to energy security at the beginning of the year due to intensified load-shedding. With various interventions such as load curtailment, the extension of diesel rebates, and the Agro-Energy Fund under implementation, the sector should refocus its attention on the master plan and explore means of implementation.

The latest crime statistics for South Africa clearly show that the government and the South African Police Service (SAPS) are failing miserably to protect citizens. This can be attributed to the wrong policy direction, cadre deployment and poor country management. The statistics further emphasise that communities, particularly agricultural communities, are left to fend for themselves in safeguarding their families, property and businesses. – January to March 2023 – showing that three murders and three attempts at murder are carried out every hour. Furthermore, 20 serious assaults take place every hour. Nineteen burglaries and three robberies are reported every hour. In addition, sixty-six cases of livestock theft occur daily. It is important to note that these figures represent a skewed image as many crimes are not reported because people have lost trust in the police’s ability to solve crimes.

The US has continued to top the list of which countries drink the most wine overall, according to preliminary figures for 2022 released by the International Organisation of Vine & Wine (OIV). Wine consumption in the US returned to pre-Covid pandemic levels last year, rising by around 3% versus 2021 to reach an estimated 34 million hectolitres (3.4bn litres), the recent OIV report said. With new technologies cropping up, family farming – one of the world’s oldest economic activities – is evolving to harness emerging opportunities for productivity and sustainability gains. Family-owned farms make up around four fifths of Earth’s farmland and are responsible for over 80% of global food production in value terms, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Dis veral baie belangrik om my man te ondersteun. READ MORE

READ MORE

SA's Crop Estimates Committee lifted the country's 2022/23 maize production estimate by 2% from last month to 16.1-million tonnes. This crop is 5% more than the 2021/22 season and the third-largest harvest on record. As stated in the previous notes, the expected large harvest is primarily on the back of large yields, as the area planted is slightly down from the 2021/22 season.

The government’s incompetence and negligence in providing basic services such as water, electricity and rail infrastructure is destroying the poultry industry and endangering the country’s food security.

As potato producers welcome the implementation by government of anti-dumping duties on imported potato chips, the poultry industry believes Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel is guilty of double standards. South African poultry producers are hoping that the government will view them as favourably as potato producers.

In 2023/24 the world will produce 178.8m tonnes of sugar, this is the second largest on record after the 2017/18 crop season. This forecast is 1.9m tonnes lower than our April update.

In the verdant heartland of South Africa, a jarring paradox of two opposing food systems manifests - one burgeoning with excess, privilege, and waste, the other scarred by scarcity, hunger, and hardship. Born in a time of transformation, when the nation sought to liberate its food system from the tight grasp of a bygone era, this paradox arose, well-intentioned, yet seeding the crisis of today.

Transnet SOC Ltd. is pushing ahead with plans to boost private participation in South Africa’s ports and freight-rail networks as the state-owned logistics company’s operational performance deteriorates.

A pricing study by the South African Ports Regulator has found that Namibia's Port of Walvis Bay, widely perceived as one of the biggest competitors to other ports in the region, is 427% more expensive than its immediate regional rival, Cape Town.
