The ANC and its alliance partners have recommended that a national state of disaster be declared over the energy crisis to ensure that sufficient financial resources are allocated to end load-shedding.The recommendation follows calls by, among others, small businesses, the DA, the National Planning Commission, and the agriculture sector, who have said a state of disaster would give the government wide-ranging powers to intervene in the nation’s worsening energy crisis. This will surely open the door for another corruption disaster that will favour the ANC who need money for 2024 election.

Twee belangrike navorsingsverslae is in Januarie bekend gemaak.

SA’s agricultural sector, a key driver of economic growth, exports roughly half of its produce in value terms and requires cold storage to keep fresh and frozen perishable fruits and vegetables at a desired temperature to maintain the quality of products for sale. In many of SA’s export markets, such as the EU, stringent regulations are applied to produce coming from SA, and the escalating load-shedding in recent months has presented fruit exporters with a challenge.  READ MORE

The Consumer Goods Council of SA (CGCSA) says retailers should not be paying the Road Accident Fund (RAF) and fuel levy included in the diesel price, when the fuel is used to power food production. Diesel for power generation is adding another layer of costs to doing business and is used in farming, food processing, cold storage and in retail stores. Shoprite announced on Tuesday it had spent R560bn on diesel to mitigate higher stages of load-shedding.

Solidarity warned that the government’s national state of disaster over the ongoing power crisis would once again open the door to large-scale corruption and fraud. On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said there is broad agreement in the ruling party to declare a state of disaster over the country’s energy crisis.

A month into 2023 and the Cape’s wine-grape harvest is under way in the warmer areas and with the earlier-ripening varieties. The producer organisation VinPro is expecting a smaller crop than those of recent years – one contributing factor, especially in the intensively irrigated areas, being the lack of electricity needed for irrigation pumps.

The processing fruit industry is experiencing tremendous challenges because of the power crisis and uncertainty over the future of Langeberg & Ashton Foods, according to Jacques Jordaan, CEO of the Canning Fruit Producers’ Association (CFPA).

A recent study in Nature found that replacing just 20 percent of global beef consumption and other grazing livestock with “microbial proteins,” or those made from fermentation, could cut annual deforestation in half by 2050. (Whether the plant-based foods, many of which are highly processed, are healthier is subject to debate.)

Table grape farmers in the Lower Orange River region are facing another challenge amid higher stages of rolling blackouts. Blackouts at stages 4 to 6 mean areas are without power for nearly half of the day. Growers say the blackouts are making it difficult for them to maintain the cold chain, which is a requirement for EU markets.
The 2023 harvest is in full swing, and growers are anticipating an export crop that is slightly lower than the previous season. The lower export volumes are a result of hail experienced during November and December impacting the Ceres and to a lesser degree the Langkloof, production regions.
Between the port of Durban, where the ships are, and the south of Johannesburg, the gateway to Gauteng's consumers and factories, there is a 670km run of double-track electrified rail.
Any outbreak of African swine fever (AFS) is a serious concern, but it is disconcerting that the latest outbreak in Gauteng has spread to a commercial pork production enterprise where strict biosecurity regulations were in place. This was according to Dr Thandi Chiappero of the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation’s (SAPPO) consumer assurance unit.
Self-driving trucks, drones buzzing through the skies to deliver the latest e-commerce order, and big truckloads of freight zipping through vacuum tubes at close to the speed of flight may still feel like science fiction to some, but they are in fact workable new technologies that are set to transform global supply technologies which – 20 years from now - will seem indispensable.''
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) last week made a shock revision to the country’s GDP growth outlook for 2023, taking the forecast down to a paltry 0.3% for the year.
Core Fruit CEO Nico van Staden hopes that the export company, which ships a wide array of fruit to 120 ports, can catch up with grape volumes from the Western Cape; they received around a fifth less grapes from Limpopo and the Orange River Valley than usual. Core Fruit usually handles between 4.5 million and 5 million 4.5kg cartons of grapes in a season
Climate change will affect all of us, but agriculture is an area where it will hit our lifestyle hard. The US Department of Agriculture's recent report, Climate Change and Agriculture in the United States: Effects and Adaptation, points to effects that are already underway and will continue to worsen just as our planet needs to feed increasingly more people.
