Short Summary - Headline News

President Cyril Ramaphosa declared South Africa's severe foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak a national disaster during his 2026 State of the Nation Address on 12 February 2026, effective around 13 February. This enables more resources and capacity across national, provincial, and local government spheres, temporary legislative adjustments (similar to COVID measures) to better manage the crisis under the Disaster Management Act (section 23), and coordinated response with primary responsibility at the national executive. The outdated Animal Diseases Act (1984) remains in force, as the 2002 Animal Health Act is still not promulgated. Key issues include abattoir regulations and up-to-1-year quarantines for infected farms, which discourage reporting and worsen spread. Proposed changes target these during the disaster period. No automatic large new funding flows; emphasis is on reallocating existing capacity after wide consultations. The declaration is welcomed by AgriSA, Western Cape government, and others as a framework for better coordination against one of the worst outbreaks in years, supporting mass vaccination (targeting ~14 million cattle with 28 million doses over 12 months in a 10-year strategy), local vaccine production, movement controls, and protection of economy, food security, and exports.

The Citrus Growers' Association of Southern Africa (CGA) has warmly welcomed last week’s announcement of a framework trade deal between South Africa and China, describing it as a “significant development” for citrus growers, the broader industry and rural communities that depend on exports. In his latest newsletter, CGA chief executive Dr Boitshoko Ntshabele called the prospect of tariff-free access for South African citrus into China “a remarkable opportunity”. He noted that many global competitors already enjoy preferential access through existing free trade agreements, and this new framework promises a more level playing field and greater competition in one of the world’s largest markets.
We live in CRUNCH times-regarding Foot and Mouth."Dark" secrets—like alleged incompetence at state entities and slow crisis responses is just a few but the big NEWS that happened in the dark may indeed coming to light very soon through audits, lawsuits, and public outcries.

Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.

Every farm that has experienced infection has suffered severe damage, and will probably suffer the effects for years. Some will not survive. Even those that manage to avoid the disease itself will have incurred costs from the preventative measures they are compelled to take and from the general dislocation of the farming economy.  The major challenge currently confronting South Africa's agriculture is the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. For many farmers across the country, the most urgent tasks are both securing sufficient vaccines and rolling them out quickly in the coming months, particularly as the beef and dairy industries continue to suffer big losses. There is also pressure on sheep, goats, and other livestock to prevent the disease from spreading. READ MORE -

South Africa -Weeklikse Landbou Nuusoorsig - Weekly Agriculture News Summary 11th February 2026

WEATHER

The current La Niña phenomenon influencing South Africa's summer rainfall season is expected to end by late February 2026, transitioning to neutral ENSO conditions, according to independent agricultural meteorologist Johan van den Berg. Sea surface temperatures in key Niño regions remain slightly cooler than average, with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) still showing La Niña tendencies, but the system peaked mid-January and has been gradually weakening.Forecasts indicate a shift to neutral by end-February, followed by El Niño tendencies emerging around June 2026, potentially developing into a strong El Niño from September 2026 to March 2027.Rainfall implications
In the next two months (March–April), summer rainfall systems may persist, bringing average to slightly above-average rain across the summer rainfall area, including much of the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and parts of the Southern Cape. A rapid, strong El Niño from mid-winter onward would favor average to above-average winter rainfall in the winter rainfall region and northward into southern parts of the country.
However, a strong El Niño could lead to very dry and hot conditions from December 2026 to March 2027 in the summer rainfall zone, with increased chances of late-season cold fronts and even delayed frost well after winter—consistent with trends over the past two to three decades where extreme cold events occur sporadically later in the season.Temperature outlook
The 2024 calendar year was the warmest on record globally, amplified by a strong El Niño and ongoing global warming. With a potential strong El Niño in the 2026/27 summer season, 2027 could be exceptionally warm, bringing reduced rainfall and very high temperatures from January to April—posing risks to heat-sensitive crops, especially in the latter half of the 2026/27 summer season.

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

As South Africa’s agricultural sector enters 2026, Nedbank’s head of sales for agriculture, Daneel Rossouw, describes the macroeconomic environment as offering cautious optimism. Interest rates have declined over recent years, inflation is around 3.5%, and the South African Reserve Bank cut the repo rate to 6.75% in November 2025, signalling the start of meaningful monetary easing.

The foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) crisis in South Africa has been building for the past two years, yet politicians only declared it a national disaster on 12 February 2026 after widespread devastation had already occurred.

South Africa launched a 10-year national vaccination drive to immunise nearly 20 million cattle against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), a highly contagious viral infection affecting ruminant livestock such as cattle, sheep and goats.

South African consumers and retailers face imminent pork price increases due to severe supply disruptions caused by African swine fever (ASF) and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks in key production areas (Free State, North West, KwaZulu-Natal, and north-east Pretoria).

Premier Alan Winde joined Western Cape Minister of Agriculture Dr Ivan Meyer and Provincial Minister of Local Government Anton Bredell today in Fisantekraal to personally witness the vaccination of 450 head of cattle belonging to communal farmers against(FMD).

The South African poultry industry has highlighted a sharp inconsistency in the government’s handling of vaccination programmes for cattle (against foot-and-mouth disease, FMD) and chickens (against avian influenza).

South Africa accounts for only 0,4% of China's agricultural supplier list. However, this current access in China is vital for the wool and red meat industry. China accounts for roughly 70% of South Africa’s wool exports.

Africa, including South Africa, faces a persistent paradox in agriculture: the sector is vital for food security, jobs, and economic growth, yet productivity remains low, climate risks are escalating, and public resources are limited.
