SA’s official unemployment rate remained on a downward trajectory in the fourth quarter of 2024, decreasing by 0.2 of a percentage point to 31.9% thanks to 132,000 jobs created during the period under review. The latest decrease in the unemployment scourge comes after the unemployment rate decreased in the third quarter from 33.5% to 32.1% due to the economy creating 294,000 jobs.  According to the results of Stats SA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey released in Pretoria on Tuesday, the number of employed people increased by 132,000 from 16.9-million to 17.1-million in the fourth quarter, while the number of unemployed people decreased by 20,000 to 8-million. Besides the agricultural sector, job losses were also recorded in utilities (17,000 jobs), mining (18,000), construction (22,000), trade (48,000) and community and social services (63,000).

Investment in improving SA Revenue Service (Sars) administration rather than increasing tax rates is a better option to improve the collection of tax revenue, Sars commissioner Edward Kieswetter says. he commissioner, speaking at a “Perspectives and Positioning for 2025” webinar hosted by Allan Gray two weeks ago, said the country must not be tempted into thinking that increasing tax rates automatically leads to bigger tax revenues. He said the experience of the 2017 VAT hikes bears testimony to this. “Changes to income tax and VAT rates are unlikely, though there were reports in the weekend papers of this being discussed. Higher tax rates might be inevitable in future if current fiscal consolidation efforts fail.”

But how do ordinary South Africans view the 4IR? Globally, research has shown that there’s a stark divide in how people view the promises and perils of modern technological advancements. The wealthy, armed with access to education and resources, see opportunity. Marginalised groups, particularly those in lower-income brackets, are left fearing job losses and economic exclusion. Historical and cultural anxieties around technology also play a role in people’s perceptions. READ MORE

The recent enactment of the Expropriation Act by President Cyril Ramaphosa has ignited widespread debate across South Africa and unexpectedly triggered a diplomatic stand-off with the United States. The new legislation, which replaces the apartheid-era Expropriation Act of 1975, allows for expropriation without compensation in cases deemed "just and equitable and in the public interest." We are a few weeks into the second Trump Administration, and there have already been major foreign policy decisions that are not only re-defining the US's view of the world but fundamentally changing the course of its partners. South Africa and the rest of the world are experiencing seismic shifts in American foreign policy in what could be a new era in global and international relations. These changes call for a sober reflection on the implications of America's foreign policy on bilateral commercial relations. READ MORE

Wheat futures climbed 17 to 23 cents across all three classes on Friday, driven by concerns over geopolitical instability and extreme winter weather. This marked the second consecutive week of gains, as traders covered short positions ahead of a three-day weekend. READ MORE

South Africa's agriculture is on its recovery path, supported by favourable rainfall and progress in controlling the spread of animal diseases, amongst other contributing factors. The previous 2023-24 production season was challenging, characterised by the mid-summer drought and animal diseases that added immense pressure to the sector. The jobs data for the fourth quarter of 2024 illustrate the difficulty the sector experienced, although much milder than we anticipated. For example, primary agriculture employment fell by 1% from the third quarter to 924k jobs in the last quarter of 2024. The field crops, game and hunting, and forestry are the subsectors that registered notable losses. However, from an annual perspective, the employment was roughly unchanged from the last quarter of 2023. Positively, the primary agricultural employment of 924k people is well above the long-term jobs of 799k.

Johann Kotze, the CEO of Agri SA, which represents more than 1,000 farmer associations across the country, says the loss of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) would be such a disaster for South African agriculture that they're doing “everything we can” to change US perceptions of Afrikaans farmers as a persecuted race.

The insect protein industry in the EU, once met with enthusiasm, is now struggling due to high production costs, economic challenges, and slow consumer acceptance of insect-based human food. Major producers like Ynsect and Agronutris in France, as well as Hexafly in Ireland, have faced financial difficulties, with some filing for safeguard proceedings.

Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum, believes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s envoys to the US will fail in their mission to ease diplomatic tensions. The delegation aims to clarify SA’s policies after claims by Donald Trump and Elon Musk of widespread land grabs under SA’s Expropriation Act, which has raised concerns about US-SA relations

A recent Rabobank report highlights the growing potential of pulses, which are currently a niche agricultural product with global production around 100 million tonnes annually. Despite being overshadowed by grains like wheat and corn, pulses are gaining attention due to their sustainability benefits, such as soil enhancement and greenhouse gas absorption.

The Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP) found that inefficiencies in South Africa’s logistics system cost the citrus industry R5.27 billion in 2024. This loss in foreign revenue threatens job creation and industry growth. The Citrus Growers’ Association (CGA) urges Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to prioritize logistics reform in the upcoming budget.

Following three consecutive interest rate cuts, with more expected, FNB has cautioned South Africans against using these cuts as an opportunity to take on bad debt. FNB Retail Loans CEO MJ Davis said the Reserve Bank’s recent decision to lower interest rates by 25 basis points for the third time in six months may provide some much-welcomed relief for South Africans with debt.

Time to address Sakeliga’s false claims that as Minister I have introduced AgriBEE and established several transformation funds. Firstly, the Department of Agriculture is not the custodian of BBBEE. Basic research by Sakeliga and Mr le Roux would have shown that the gazetting and promulgation of the architecture and regulatory framework was done by the Department of Trade and Industry, and codes of good practice were signed by the then Minister of DTI in 2017. Secondly, to debunk the claim that I have established several transformation funds. The statuary levies are not determined by the Minister but rather voluntarily initiated by 21 commodity groups and forwarded to the National Agricultural Marketing Council to investigate and initiate the report to the Minister for gazetting. Moreover, these statuary measures by commodity groups are a voluntary process, and is something the industry chooses not a ministerial diktat. I will as the minister of Agriculture, continue to support interventions which create equalities of opportunity rather than those that seek to manipulate equalities of outcome.  Without a sense of urgency to overcome historical injustice by those in government, South Africa will not enjoy a prosperous future.   If Sakeliga wishes to challenge the statutory levies and their use then they are welcome to approach the courts, summon each of the independent commodity organisations and try to convince a judge why their model of genuine sector-led and bottom-up empowerment is unlawful.   However, if I was a Sakeliga member or funder I would seriously be questioning the value of such an obsessive focus of Sakeliga resources on nit-picking genuine community-led empowerment initiatives that are working, especially when there exist far more pernicious and failing trickle-down and elite transfer practices that deserve more urgent attention and intervention.
